Massage Chair Industry Update – October 14, 2016 (Video)

Transcript of Video Titled “Massage Chair Industry Update – October 14, 2016”

microphoneAlan: Hi, I’m Dr. Alan Weidner from ‘Massage-Chair-Relief.com’ and today is our biweekly massage chair industry update for Friday, October 14th, 2016.

[SCREEN TEXT: Stock Status]

Alan: Stock-wise, the ‘Bone’-colored ZeroG 5.0 is on back-order until early next week, the 17th, but as far as I’m aware, I think all other chair models and colors are in stock. And of course, sometimes we don’t really even know if a thing is in stock or not until we call to place an order, and then we find out, because we’re often not notified of stock supplies of a lot of different companies. But anyway, just to let you know, the ‘Bone’ ZeroG 5.0 is out of stock until next week.

[SCREEN TEXT: Current Massage Chair Sales]

Alan: Oh, and as far as sales go, you may or may not be aware that the Ogawa chairs have a sale going on right now, where you get a free extended warranty, a two-year extended warranty on the Ogawa Smart 3D, and the Ogawa Active, and the Ogawa Refresh has a free Foot Therapy Plus, which is a foot-and-calf massager that they include with the sale of that chair. Also on sale now, starting this month, is the Navitas Sleep from Human Touch. It’s regularly – well, I believe it’s $5999 regularly – anyway, it’s on sale now for $4999, and we also are including free white-glove delivery on that, so on the Navitas Sleep, and that’s a nice chair.

[SCREEN TEXT: Navitas Sleep from Human Touch]

Alan: The Navitas is a coordinated effort between Human Touch, and a company called Johnson Wellness. We used to carry the Johnson Wellness chairs a few years ago, when they were trying to distribute them on their own, in the United States. It was originally a Taiwanese-made chair, the company has designers and engineers formerly from Panasonic, and Inada, and Fujiiryoki. Anyway, this company makes some nice chairs. Human Touch created this Navitas Sleep with the Johnson Wellness, and it’s a nice chair. It’s the only chair that we have that has actual calf rollers that go up and down the side of the calves, and maybe I’ll talk a little bit about that. There’s other chairs that have calf rollers, and the only two that come to mind that have calf rollers, other than the Navitas Sleep, are the Apex Ultra, and the uKnead Lavita, and they have a little round disc that rotates behind the gastrocnemius muscles, which are the basic big calf muscles, and it’s an interesting feature, I mean, it kind of adds something that other chairs don’t have. But the Navitas, on the other hand, actually has rollers – oh, and those other chairs, the Apex Ultra and the uKnead Lavita, they have airbags that still compress on the sides, but they also have the roller in the back – well, the Navitas from Human Touch does not have airbags in the calves, it has rollers that go up and down both sides of your calves. It’s an amazing feature, I love it. That chair also has like 36 different programs, auto programs, it’s quite a remarkable chair, I like it, but I will tell you, the calf massage is quite strong, and it might take a little getting used to. And you can start the calf massage off just doing the lower part of the calves, and another third up, and another third up, or quarters, I can’t remember, but it’s a little intense at first. So, if you’re not used to it, and you don’t like that intensity from the full calf massage, you can also just start with the lower part of the calf being massaged, but it’s a great massage, a great calf massage. And if you are a runner, or someone that, you know, an athlete of some sort that spends a lot of time lifting with their legs, or whatever, or someone that stands all day, and your calves get worn out, this chair is pretty remarkable that way, but it is a strong massage, I just will warn you. It also has foot rollers, it has arm airbags, and all the other airbags that you’d want, but it’s a very unique chair, and I really like that chair.

[SCREEN TEXT: Human Touch Ascent Series]

Alan: Anyway, they dropped the price down to $4999, we will include white-glove delivery, because a lot of these chairs that they call the Ascent chairs, A-S-C-E-N-T, the Ascent series, like the Bali, like the Navitas Sleep, like the Novo, that I talked about on my last industry update, when I visited Human Touch, those chairs are all fully assembled when they come, so there’s no assembly, but they’re big chairs, so they’re not easy to move. They’re big, and they might be a little too difficult also to negotiate around some corners, and hallways, and whatnot, in your home, but of course, you could have that problem with any chair. But anyway, it’s a big chair, so worth throwing in the white-glove service with the Navitas Sleep, just so that you know. Also, oh, the Ogawa sale, I forgot to mention, the Ogawa sale ends October 21st, so a week from today, next Friday, that sale ends.

[SCREEN TEXT: Titan TP-Pro 8400 Discontinued]

Alan: I took off the Titan 8400 off the site, I took it off the site, that chair has been discontinued. We just sold our floor model that we had in the Utah showroom. They’ve replaced it with the Osaki TP-8500, which seems to be like the 8400, but with a little bit more airbags, a little bit longer roller track. I can’t remember the other features, but the 8400 has been replaced by 8500, and I think it’s $3295 now, instead of $2995, but just so you know, the Titan 8400 is now off the market.

[SCREEN TEXT: Luraco CEDIA Awards]

Alan: Luraco, congratulations to Luraco. A few weeks ago, on our industry update, we congratulated Inada for winning their award for design. Well, now Luraco has received two awards, and they received them at the international CEDIA, C-E-D-I-A, which is the custom electronic design installation association, their expo, which was in July, and they won two awards. And to describe this organization, it is an organization that brings together the manufacturers of high-end home audio/video, home theater, home security, home lighting, home automation, and home-networking products, with those companies that sell and install in the high-end consumers’ homes. Well, these are companies that are kind of companies that do a lot for, you know, luxury homes, as far as auto/video, and automation, and whatnot. And the chair won an award, it says ‘the CEDIA Best of Show 2016,’ and they won the best show winner, and ‘Quality Award in Home Furnishings,’ oh, innovation and tech choice. So, anyway, congratulations to Luraco for having won that award.

[SCREEN TEXT: New Model from Luraco Coming Next Year]

Alan: I might also mention that Luraco – you know, the iRobotics 7 has become a very, very popular high-end selling chair – and they have another chair called the i6, and they’ve been discontinuing that chair, and I believe the stock is almost out, and they are going to be replacing that chair sometime in the new year with another model. It’s not going to be a model that’s as sophisticated as the i7, as far as feature set and build, but it’s going to be another great chair. It always is from Luraco, and I don’t know much about it. They won’t tell me much, I know a little bit, but they don’t want me to say anything about it. I know a little bit about it, but I’m going to the CES, the consumer electronics show, in Las Vegas, in January, where they’re going to have a prototype of that chair there, so I’m excited to go there and see what it’s all about. I think it’ll probably be a popular chair, as most chairs, and most of the products from companies like Luraco are. It’ll be a popular – they don’t have many offerings – I mean, hello, they’ve got two chairs basically, and this one will replace the i6. And I’m excited to see it, and when I go to the consumer electronics show – and I’m embarrassed to say, having been in the massage chair industry for all these years, I’ve never been to the consumer electronics show – but I’m going to go in January, on invitation from Luraco, so I can go see this new chair, and get some video footage of it, and video footage of anything else I see there in the world of massage chairs, so anyway, just to let you know.

[SCREEN TEXT: Massage Chair Research Findings]

Alan: And finally, I just want to chat a little bit about – OK, as you know, and I haven’t talked about this in a long time – I became involved with a research project at Weber State University with Dr. Michael Olpin, who runs the Stress Center there, and they have a number of chairs. As a matter of fact, they’ve got, I think, golly, I’d probably say five or six chairs there that they use for students, staff, you know, employees of the university, whatnot. They can come into the Stress Center, and just relax on these massage chairs. They also have other things there too, I think they have like – oh, I can’t remember, I’ve been there a couple of times – but like they’ve got an aqua-massage bed, and they’ve got some biofeedback things going on, and it’s pretty cool place. It’s very relaxed, very mellow. Anyway, they’ve been collecting data on everyone that sits in massage chairs, and this whole project came to be over a year ago when Dr. Olpin told me that they actually have measurements of stress levels, pain levels, blood pressure, pulse, temperature, etcetera, etcetera, pre and post-sitting in the massage chair, in other words, before and after sitting in the massage chairs. So, I said ‘Holy cow, this is invaluable information,’ so they’ve been harvesting data over the last year, or actually, number of years, three, four years, but especially over the last couple years since they have more chairs. And I just got this email from Mike last week, and it says there’s a guy that’s working on his master’s degree who’s analyzing all of the data, and he’s putting them together now, but Michael thought that he would send me some preliminary results, and I’d like to share this results with you. And this is what he – he says the results – he said it looks like all of the results are statistically significant. In other words, there’s enough of a difference between pre and post that it is worthy of analysis and research. So, he says here we have 7900 people who used one of the several massage chairs, and this is – 7900 is a huge sample size, you know, maybe 10 or 20 would be – or 1 or 2 or 3 would be considered a very small sample size, 7900 is an enormous sample size. Anyway, here are some of the pre and post results. The pre stress levels, and this is, again, measured before sitting in the massage chair, and then measured again after the massage chair experience, pre stress levels, on a scale of 1 to 10, 5.06; post stress level, 2.85. Pain, pre pain level, 2.63; post pain level, 1.44. Pre heart rate, in other words, the heart rate of the user before they sat on the massage chair, average was 78.64 pulses per minute; after was 72.35, so a drop of over 6 pulses per minute. Pre blood pressure, systolic – OK, so when you look at your blood pressure 120/80 for example, 120 is the systolic, and the 80 underneath is the diastolic, and they both represent certain things, and I won’t go into those details, but you don’t want it too high, or in some cases, too low, but we’re always worried about high blood pressure, I mean, that’s part of our culture is stress, and high blood pressure, and heart problems – well, pre blood pressure, systolic was 119.63; post was 114.97, so a 5-point drop in the systolic blood pressure measurement. And the diastolic, which is the bottom number, went from 75.41 pre, to 71.94 post, so a drop of approximately 4 points. So, the massage chair, based on this data, and this will all eventually come out in a published article, and presentation, but the bottom line is the massage chairs have helped drop stress levels, drop pain levels, drop pulse rates, and have dropped blood pressure. I mean, duh. Do you realize this is really the first time studies have been done on massage chairs? And this data is significant, and of course, we’ve been saying this all along, that based on massage, actual massage studies, that these things have dropped, that these things are benefitted by a massage chair, or by massage, and now massage chairs. Well, this is the first study on actual massage chairs to prove that those benefits are equally available to massage-chair users, as they are to massage, you know, hands-on-massage-therapy users. Anyway, I just think it’s fascinating, and I really dig it, and I just thought you might want to know, and so you can dig it too. Well, anyway, I think that’s just about it for this week.
