Alan: Now, when people say hip pain, it’s a pretty generic โ it’s like shoulder, I have shoulder pain, well, what do you mean by shoulder โ is it the deltoid muscle, is it the trapezius muscle, is it the levator scapula, is it between the shoulder blades, what does shoulder mean? Hip is the same way. Hip can mean different things to different people. Hip, by pure definition, is actually the joint where the femoral head goes in to the pelvic bone. Thatโs a hip problem. Some people say that right back here by the SI joint, or the top of the buttock, thatโs their hip. Some feel the hip is in the front, inguinal pain like this, or inguinal discomfort. So, it depends on what it is that, where your pain is, and so you’ll want to kind of understand what that is, and then you can find a chair that will be able to address that. Now, I’m going to show three different features of chairs that can address hip problems, whatever a hip problem is, whatever a hip pain is. And again, I want to qualify this by saying that massage chairs will typically help muscular problems, and maybe some soft-tissue ligamentous problems just by inducing motion in to a joint.

Alan: But it’s not going to fix things like, you know, like if you have like a cyst, or a tumor, or if youโve got a severe hit replacement needed even, it can’t help the hip then. But it can help the muscles around the hip โ or severe arthritis, or a trauma, like if youโve had an impact to the hip, and it’s a bruised bone โ the massage chair’s not going to help that stuff, but all those things can have muscle spasm and ultimately, scar tissue associated with that trauma, or that condition, or pathology, and the massage chair can help with those muscles. So, I’m going to show you three different things, three different features that most, not most, but some chairs have, that can address hip pain here, hip pain here, and hip pain here. And so, the first thing we’re going to talk about is the direct femoral-joint pain, there’s not much that’ll hit that area. If we back up here, I’m going to show you on the Inada DreamWave, there are airbags that inflate on the sides of the thighs, and this actually is an effective treatment on some chairs, like the Inada DreamWave, like the Osaki Dreamer, and like the Panasonic MA73. Those airbags actually will hit the iliotibial bands on the side, and in some cases, will reach the hip. So, these airbags can inflate and put a compression force on the hip joint.

Alan: Now, a lot of chairs have these types of airbags, and like you can see them over here on this chair. There are some airbags here as well, on the hips, but those are not designed so much to dig in, like a massage therapist’s elbow, or knuckle, or palm of the hand, like to do a compression massage. Many of the chairs that have those types of hip airbags are designed to just hold the hips in place while the rollers go up and down your back, so you’re not moving too much while the rollers are tractioning up your back. But some chairs, like the ones I mentioned earlier, do have therapeutic airbag compression from these hip airbags, that’ll dig in to the iliotibial band, which does attach to the hip, by the way, and it can also hit the actual hip area. So, thatโs one thing to be aware of. On the second chair, which is the Human Touch Novo XT, I want to show you two other things that will help with hip pain. If youโve got hip pain back here, like in the back, or the top of the buttock, the L-track, which is the rollers that go down the back, following the S-shape of the curve, and then they go underneath, and massage the glutes and the buttock muscles. That can often help hip pain that is considered upper buttock pain, or just off the sacroiliac, or the tail bone, tail bone area. That L-track, and many chairs have L-tracks, it’s become a very, very popular feature on massage chairs nowadays. And those will dig down, and it helps with sciatica โ and we have another video that talks about sciatica, you can see that โ but it helps a lot with this buttock, hip area, the upper buttock, hip area.

Alan: And the third thing that some chairs do, and the Novo actually has this, and a lot of the non-L-track chairs have this, they have airbags โ if they donโt have rollers that go down in to the buttock โ they usually have airbags in the seat that will inflate and lift up one side of the hip, and then the other side of the hip. That can help with some of the muscular hip discomfort as well. But this chair actually has, and you can see here, there’s a flap in the seat. So, not only does it have the L-track coming down and massaging the glutes close to the tail bone, but on the outside of the hip, behind the hip bone, like not necessarily on the hip here, but just behind it, these airbags will inflate, and it does feel like a knuckle or an elbow thatโs digging in to your muscle. And it’s pretty cool, and not every chair has that, but the Novo just happens to have both those, so I thought I’d show it on that chair. And then of course, on the DreamWave, we showed you the iliotibial-band airbags that will also affect the hip.

Alan: So, I hope that made sense, I hope I wasnโt too complicated, or explained it too complicatedly. But if you found this video helpful, feel free to give me a call at 888-259-5380, and I’ll be happy to explain it even more. Or if you’re not sure exactly if you have hip pain, or where your pain’s coming from, I can maybe help you figure out, first of all, if a chair will even help you, and secondly, if, you know, what model or models would be best for you.
