Alan: It does not mean that your hamstrings are being stretched, or your neck is being stretched per se. It is more of a stretching of the spine, elongating the spine, arching the spine, and in some chairs, you’ll have shoulder airbags that will also inflate, like the IT-8500, or the new Flex 3S chair from Inada, and they will actually pin the shoulders back while the chair is reclining, so it accentuates the stretch even more. You will see here on the Sogno, also, rollers, and all other massage chairs do the same thing, they either use airbags or rollers, to work the spine, and rotate the spine from side to side as well. That’s what happening to the Sogno right here, you’ll see this side inflating, this side deflates, and then this side will deflate, and this side inflates, and it rotates the spine from side to side, that’s another mode of stretch. There’s other chairs, like the Osaki Cyber, where you have your arms in the armrests, and the chair grabs your arms, and then it reclines, so it kind of stretches your arms out of the sockets a little bit as well. The Iyashi chair reclines, and it doesn’t have a full recline like this, but it’ll recline, and the zero-gravity seat will tilt up, and then the ottoman extends out, so it kind of pulls your legs, and that gives you a different type of a feel, of a stretch, as well. So, there’s various and sundry types of stretches, in the various and sundry types of massage chairs, depending on the manufacturer, but the most typical is, the chair back reclining, the ottoman going down, up, down, up, down. The new Inada Flex 3S actually brings the chair in to a full flexed position, and pulls the shoulders back, and has rollers working on you while you’re in the flexed position.

Alan: So, stretching can include flexing now, as well as extending, or arching, and so that’s why I say it’s more of a milking motion of the spine, or of the upper back, going up and down, and the legs going up and down simultaneously, and it’s a very relaxing program. Virtually everyone loves the stretch program, in any chair, it’s a wonderful feel, and it’s very soothing, it’s relaxing, the chair is dynamically moving, it’s not just a set position, and that is essentially what a stretch does. I hope this helps you understand the definition of stretch, as it pertains to a massage chair. Some of the companies, like Infinite Therapeutics, their program is called ‘Extend,’ they don’t call it a stretch, they call it ‘Extend,’ but for the most part, all the chairs that have a stretch program, and virtually all chairs do nowadays, they call it the ‘Stretch Program,’ or ‘Stretch.’ So, I hope that helps you define the term stretch, in the massage chair industry.
