Massage Chair Relief LIVE! Podcast — Guest: Dr. Michael Olpin

Hello, this is Dr. Alan Weidner from Massage Chair Relief, and welcome to another episode of the Massage Chair Relief LIVE! Podcast.

Today, I’m joined by Dr. Michael Olpin, a long-time friend and expert in stress management and relaxation science. Michael and I have known each other for years—we both live in Utah, and I’ve always admired his work helping people understand and manage stress in healthy ways.

Dr. Weidner: Michael, thank you for being here today. You’ve written books, developed university-level courses, and done extensive research on stress management. For those who might not know you, can you share a little about your background and what led you into this field?

Dr. Olpin: Thank you, Alan. It’s great to be here. My background is in health promotion and stress management. I’ve been studying and teaching stress reduction for over 30 years. Early on, I realized that while stress is one of the biggest health issues people face, most don’t know how to effectively manage it. I wanted to bridge that gap—helping people understand not just what stress is, but how to lower it through evidence-based relaxation techniques.

Over the years, I’ve developed courses, written several books, and conducted research to help people learn to calm both the body and mind. My work centers on practical skills—things people can use right away to live calmer, healthier lives.

Dr. Weidner: That’s one of the things I’ve always respected about your approach—you make the science of stress understandable and applicable. I remember you once told me that stress itself isn’t the problem; it’s how we respond to it that affects our health.

Dr. Olpin: Exactly. Stress isn’t inherently bad—it’s part of being alive. The issue is when we stay stuck in a stress response. Our bodies are designed to handle short bursts of stress, not constant tension. Chronic stress keeps our systems on high alert, which can lead to a range of physical and emotional problems.

Relaxation isn’t just about feeling good—it’s a physiological process that restores balance to the body. When we practice deep relaxation, we activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which lowers heart rate, blood pressure, and muscle tension. This allows the body to repair itself and function properly.

Dr. Weidner: That makes perfect sense, and it ties directly into why so many people benefit from massage chairs. The physical relaxation people experience often helps them let go of mental stress too.

Dr. Olpin: Absolutely. A massage chair can be a great tool for helping people experience real relaxation. Most of us don’t take time to slow down, breathe, and let our bodies rest. When someone sits in a massage chair, they’re giving themselves permission to pause—and that can have powerful effects on both mind and body.

Dr. Weidner: I’ve seen that firsthand with my customers. People often come in because of back pain or stiffness, but after using a massage chair for a while, they talk about sleeping better, feeling calmer, and even handling stress differently. It’s not just physical—it’s emotional and mental too.

Dr. Olpin: Exactly. Massage helps release tension that builds up in muscles, but it also helps calm the nervous system. When you pair that with mindful breathing or even a short meditation while sitting in the chair, you multiply the benefits.

Dr. Weidner: That’s great advice. I know you’ve written about how chronic stress affects not only mood but also long-term health. Could you touch on that briefly?

Dr. Olpin: Sure. Chronic stress contributes to nearly every major health problem we face—heart disease, digestive issues, immune dysfunction, anxiety, depression, and more. When we live in a constant state of tension, our bodies use up energy that should be going toward repair and recovery. Over time, that wears us down.

The good news is, when we learn to activate the relaxation response regularly—whether through breathing, mindfulness, or massage—we give our bodies a chance to heal. Even 10 or 15 minutes of true relaxation a day can make a big difference.

Dr. Weidner: That’s really encouraging. You and I have talked about how simple habits can make huge changes. Sometimes people think stress management has to be complicated, but it’s really about consistency.

Dr. Olpin: Yes, exactly. The key is practice. Just like physical exercise strengthens muscles, relaxation practice strengthens your ability to stay calm under pressure. Over time, your default response to stress becomes more balanced—you recover faster, think more clearly, and feel better overall.

Dr. Weidner: Wonderful insight, Michael. I really appreciate you taking the time to share this with us today. It’s always a pleasure to learn from you.

Dr. Olpin: Thank you, Alan. It’s always great to talk with you. I really appreciate what you do at Massage Chair Relief—helping people bring relaxation into their daily lives through technology that truly works.

Dr. Weidner: Thank you for saying that. And to everyone watching or listening, thank you for joining us on today’s episode.
