One of the most useful safety features to appear on massage chairs in recent years is the backup battery.

If you’re enjoying a massage and the power suddenly goes out—whether from a power outage, power surge, or another electrical issue—the chair could stop while you’re fully reclined.

Anyone who’s experienced that knows it’s not much fun. Climbing out of a fully reclined massage chair without power can be awkward and difficult, especially if you’re alone.

That’s where the backup battery comes in.

Luraco was one of the first manufacturers to introduce this feature. If the chair loses power during a massage, the backup battery automatically returns the chair to its upright, neutral position, allowing you to get out safely and comfortably.

Since then, we’ve started seeing similar battery systems on a few other massage chair models. Some use an integrated backup battery, while others allow you to connect a battery pack that provides enough power to return the chair to its upright position if electricity is lost.

I expect this feature to become more common in the future because it’s a simple solution to a frustrating problem. If a chair loses power while you’re fully reclined, a backup battery can make getting out much easier.
