You’ve probably seen tons of articles about how sitting for prolonged periods at work can cause back pain, but a new study says that standing for too long can have negative effects as well. Research on the health risks of standing for too long at work have shown that it can cause fatigue, leg cramps, and back pain, all of which can cause discomfort, and also affect work performance and productivity.
“The work-related musculoskeletal implications that can be caused by prolonged standing are a burden not only for workers but also for companies and society.” Says Maria Gabriela Garcia, who is working towards her doctorate in the department of health and sciences and technology at ETH Zurich in Switzerland.
The researcher also notes that long term muscle fatigue caused by prolonged standing has not received much attention in years. After the study, results showed that even when they had regular breaks, the volunteers experienced significant long-term fatigue following their 5-hour simulated working day.
