Jackson Montgomery, 9, is getting ready to start fifth grade with a new backpack.
Pediatrician Preeti Parikh recommends that kids avoid messenger bags, use a bag with two wide, padded straps to distribute the load and make sure the bag is not too heavy.
If you do have heavy items, try to center the backpack, pack it and in the lower backpack to distribute the weight, said Dr. Parikh.
Kids who have to carry a lot of books might want to consider a backpack that rolls.
