Despite major medical efforts to get rid of leprosy, the infection still affects about 250,000 new people per year. The infection can cause more than discomfort, it can also cause extreme pain, and unfortunately can be transmitted from person to person through nasal secretions from untreated patients. Although leprosy has been very well controlled in the past years, it still remains a public health problem in developing countries.
