According to a recent study in Science Daily, the stress hormone cortisol strengthens memories of scary or traumatic experiences. It is effective not only for the memory being formed for the first time, but also later in life when you look back at an experience while the memory reconsolidates. The researchers suggest that the results might explain the persistence of strong emotional memories that occur in post traumatic stress disorder.
