Used and refurbished massage chairs are both options if you don’t want to buy new or if you’re looking for a good chair at a lower price.
Let’s start with refurbished chairs.
There are a few important things you need to know. First, refurbished chairs typically come with a warranty because they are usually sold by distributors—the companies that originally imported the chairs from China, Japan, or elsewhere.
However, you need to understand the details of that warranty:
- How long does it last?
- Is it the remainder of the original factory warranty?
- Is it 3 months, 6 months, or a full year?
- Does it cover parts and labor, or just parts?
These are important questions to ask.
Another key consideration is whether the model has been discontinued. If it has, you need to think about how available replacement parts will be in the future.
For example, the chair might work perfectly when you receive it, but if it breaks down a year later and parts are no longer readily available, you could be waiting months—sometimes up to six months—for parts to be reordered and shipped.
Those are the primary concerns with refurbished chairs.
That said, the pricing is usually attractive, and you do get support from the distributor and often from the retailer as well.
Now, let’s talk about used chairs.
Used chairs are a different situation.
If you’re buying a used chair from an authorized dealer—such as a returned unit or a floor model—there may be an option to transfer the warranty to you as the new owner. That can provide some peace of mind.
However, if you’re buying from a private seller—such as someone on Facebook Marketplace or a local listing—that’s a different story.
No major massage chair distributor allows warranty transfers for private sales.
So, if someone tells you, “This chair still has two or three years left on the warranty,” that is not accurate. Once the chair leaves the original purchaser’s home, the warranty is typically void.
You should not rely on that claim.
Another important factor is the age of the chair. Is it an older model? Has it been discontinued? Can you still get replacement parts?
These are critical considerations when buying a used chair, especially from a private seller.
Understanding these differences will help you make a better decision and avoid wasting money—both in the short term and the long term.
