Split Flex Track massage chairs create deeper stretching and better comfort

Nowadays, pretty much every massage chair has an SL-track. That means the rollers travel down your back in an S-shape, then continue underneath your buttocks and seat in an L-shape—hence the name SL-track.

More recently, manufacturers have introduced split tracks (also called flex tracks). These feature a separation between the bottom third of the roller track and the upper two-thirds. The junction is connected by a metal or hard-plastic component that keeps the two sections linked.

The advantage of a split or flex track becomes clear when the chair reclines into a stretch position. Instead of remaining locked in the curved SL shape, the rollers can fully flatten out. This creates a straight track that allows for a deeper, more effective stretch.

You’ll typically hear two terms for this design:

  • Split track – referring to the track itself being divided into sections
  • Flex track – referring to the flexible connecting component that allows the track to straighten when the chair fully extends
