How to Customize Any Massage Chair Program Like a Pro!

Most massage chairs come with automatic programs, each with different titles and names based on the therapeutic benefits they offer to you, the user. These programs can range from as few as five to as many as 35, depending on the brand and model.

In these automatic programs, the rollers and airbags are configured specifically to achieve the therapeutic goals of that program. You can usually adjust the intensity of the airbags, as well as the speed and depth of the rollers. While the overall choreography of the program remains the same, you have flexibility to fine-tune elements like speed, intensity, and compression to suit your preferences.

On the other hand, most massage chairs also offer manual programs, which let you create a customized experience.

For example, let’s say you just want the rollers to work on your neck or the base of your skull, and you prefer kneading, tapping, or a combination of both. You can set all of that up. Here’s a simple five-step process I typically follow:

Step 1:
Select the modality you want the rollers to perform—kneading, tapping, or both.

Step 2:
Choose the roller location setting: a single point, a zone, or your entire spine. I usually start with the point option, which allows the rollers to focus on one specific area.

Step 3:
Use the arrow buttons to move the rollers up or down until they reach your desired spot. When you stop pressing the arrow, the rollers will remain in that spot and work on that specific area.

Step 4:
Once the rollers are in position, adjust the speed and intensity. If you want airbags activated as well, turn them on and select the areas you want targeted—maybe just the arms or shoulders to complement the neck massage. You can also fine-tune the airbag intensity at this stage.

Step 5:
You can move the rollers during your session. For example, after five minutes on the neck, you might want to shift the focus to the upper back. You can do this easily without stopping the session.

If your chair has a memory function, you can save your customized program and activate it with the press of a button every time you sit down.

Manual programming can be a bit confusing at first, especially because it’s not always immediately clear how to control the rollers and airbags. But once you understand the process, it’s quite simple—and most chairs follow a very similar setup.
