How Much Is a Massage Chair?

how much is a massage chair

Life’s daily hustle and bustle can be so stressful and overwhelming that sometimes, you just want to lie down and relax with a massage. While everything around you seems too fast-paced, you’d probably want to take a break and release all the tension in your body.

However, visiting a spa or hiring someone to come to your home may not be a feasible option. That is where the massage chair comes in. Even with the convenience it brings, you might still have questions like: “How much is a massage chair, and is it worth it to buy one?”

While prices vary, massage chairs usually cost around $1,000 to $10,000. To help you understand the difference in costs and learn how to buy a massage chair that’s worth your money, we’ve prepared the following guide for you.

Factors That Determine Massage Chair Costs

In general, the pricier a therapeutic chair is, the more quality and advanced features it will offer. However, there are also relatively cheaper massage chairs that provide a high level of comfort and performance.

Variations in prices may be caused by several factors. For example, more expensive massage chairs contain customizable and automated massage programs. Then, Bluetooth speakers, body scan technology, and app functionality may be present for a personalized and maximum massage experience.

Other impressive features include advanced reflexology massage for your feet and calves and the use of full-body heating features. Advanced rollers for more concentrated and effective massages and massage tracks that will reach different parts of your body also affect the cost of your massage chair.

Some designs of massage chairs save a lot of space and allow for a full recline in just a couple of inches. Other massage chairs offer chromotherapy, which helps give you strength physically, mentally, emotionally, and even spiritually.

There’s also that zero-gravity recline capability, which extends your knees and elevates them above your heart. As a result, you will feel a sense of weightlessness, which, in turn, helps decompress your spine.

Thus, from body scanners, rollers, and heat therapy to speakers and zero gravity, prices of massage chairs may increase depending on the use of cutting-edge technology and other special features.

Getting a Massage Chair: Why It’s Worth It

For some people, massage chairs are too expensive. However, in reality, they’ll help you save money in the long run. When you get a massage from professional therapists once a week, you might end up spending around $3,000 to $,5000 within one year. This already includes the massage cost per hour and some gratuity.

Meanwhile, your massage chair — with costs that start at just $1,000 — lasts several years, and you won’t have to keep fixing your schedules just to visit the spa because you can use it as you please. Moreover, it’s a great investment for your health. Apart from comfort and relaxation, it offers several advantages that will positively impact your overall health and wellbeing.

Speeds Up Post-Workout Recovery

Despite daily busy schedules, you should allot some time for exercises and workouts to maintain a healthy mind and body. While it’s good to stay committed to your workout routines, you might also end up having sore muscles, especially if you’ve pushed yourself too much.

With a trusted therapeutic chair, you can quickly recover after a workout with the help of a zero-gravity position and deep tissue massage. In fact, according to Science Daily, massage therapy can relieve muscle pain after exercise. Thus, it would be easier to resume your daily activities immediately.

The same study noted that even those who did not exercise showed an improvement in vascular function. This demonstrates how beneficial massage is regardless of their level of physical activity.

Relieves Stress and Anxiety

According to different studies, massage therapy helps relieve physical and physiological stress. For instance, one study showed that blood pressure, cortisol level or stress hormone, and oxygen consumption reduced about 10 to 15 minutes after the massage. Another study examined the effectiveness of chair massage while using nursing professionals as subjects. Results revealed that stress was significantly reduced.

Moreover, massage therapy helps stimulate serotonin or the feel-good hormone. It’s responsible for regulating your mood, learning, memory, appetite, and digestion. Using a massage chair can also help manage your anxiety. For example, a randomized controlled study highlighted that those who underwent massage therapy for about three months experienced fewer anxiety symptoms by 50%. Thus, using massage chairs can help manage sleep problems, tension, and other symptoms.

Promotes Better Sleep

According to the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC), a third of adults in the U.S. lack sleep. Several factors might cause this, like dependence on mobile devices, social media, and lifestyle problems. To experience relaxation and better sleep, several people would use a massage chair.

Given that massages help enhance serotonin and dopamine levels, your mood becomes better, which then helps you relax and sleep more comfortably. While more studies have yet to be conducted about the effectiveness of massage in treating sleep disorders, available data show that it can help those with secondary insomnia. These include people with congestive heart failure, cancer, menopause, and other health conditions.

Facilitates Blood Flow

Based on research performed at the University of Illinois at Chicago, another benefit of massage therapy is enhanced blood flow. Massage programs like pressing, squeezing, and patting are made possible, thanks to a roller system. As it vibrates and moves across different parts of the back of your body, it helps facilitate better blood circulation.

Also, the massage chair’s zero-gravity feature allows improved blood flow throughout your muscles. Thus, it is effective in managing circulatory problems and enhancing oxygen intake.

As previously mentioned, massage also helps relieve stress. Thus, blood flow will be improved because stress causes an increase in heart rate and blood pressure. A boost in blood circulation then includes several benefits, such as faster recovery from illnesses and injuries and removal of body toxins.

How To Find the Best Massage Chair

Besides raising questions like, “how much is a massage chair,” you may also want to know how to buy a massage chair. To help you make a wise investment and choose the best massage chair for you, we have presented the different factors to consider:

Features

Learning how to buy a massage chair is not complete without checking the features or functions. For example, zero-gravity chairs offer weightlessness, which allows you to enjoy deep relaxation. Shiatsu therapeutic chairs also include rolling, pressing, and swaying, thus targeting various pressure points in your body.

Other features that give you optimum comfort include heat therapy, kneading, reflexology, sound therapy, and varying roller intensity. Expect that having more quality features also means paying a bigger amount. However, you’re sure to get your money’s worth, especially with their health benefits.

If you think you’ll only need specific features, like a relaxing foot massage, then choose chairs with foot massagers. Meanwhile, if you’re suffering from neck and shoulder pain, buy massage chairs that target easing pain in those areas of the body. It’s also best to try various chairs first, so you’ll know which gives you the ultimate massage chair experience.

Price

If you don’t know much about the price range of massage chairs, you might be surprised and end up not buying one anymore. As we have mentioned, quality therapeutic chairs can cost around $1,000 to $10,000. While prices differ based on multiple factors, like technology, upholstery, and function, it’s a good idea to skip those that are lower than $1,000.

Also, you have to consider your budget and how much you’re willing to shell out. Do you plan on paying for the massage chair for a couple of months, or do you want to have it in one go? Set your budget first, and don’t pressure yourself. It all depends on what works for you.

Remember that overall, massage chairs are more cost-effective compared to regular spa visits. They come with several health benefits too and last longer if used properly, giving you a lot of bang for your buck.

Size

If you already have a preferred weight or height capacity, it would be easier to find the massage chair that suits your needs. Usually, massage chairs work for heights around five to seven feet and weights of 280 pounds maximum.

Also, consider the area where you’ll place your massage chair. They’re meant to recline to give you that added comfort, so there should be sufficient space. Fortunately, advanced models have space-saving features or zero walls. This means that you only have to put your chair around two inches from your wall. Thus, if you don’t want your massage chair to take up so much space, choose a model with such features.

Warranty and Customer Service

You should check the warranty and coverage before buying a massage chair. Verify whether they provide at least a 30-day money-back guarantee and cover at least parts and labor. Also, confirm whether you can contact their company conveniently in case you encounter any problems or questions about the massage chair. Trusted companies selling superior massage chairs would include toll-free numbers or chat support to help address your concerns.

  1. Hi Dr. Weidner, I have had a Sanyo Wellaway for over 40 yrs, it still works fine but starting to groan a bit (due to age), like us all. I am 6ft 4in and 250 lbs with a 32inch leg and appreciate a brutal massage. I read your review re the Daiwa Supreme Hybrid, would this be a good recommendation for me? I used your chair program and it had no choices for me after I completed it. Thanks for your very informative site, I and many others appreciate the hard work you put into it.

    1. Hi, Dennis
The Hybrid would be a good choice for a strong neck and shoulder massage. It does a good job throughout the spine, but it really excels in brutality on the neck and shoulders. Your height precludes you from a lot of chairs. Your leg length should be fine (just follow my tip in the Hybrid review I wrote on my blog this week if your knees are too high up in the default recline position). Other chairs that handle your height would be the Daiwa Pegasus, Human Touch Super Novo, the Luraco i9, and the Infinity Genesis Max, but nothing will massage you as vigorously and deeply as the dual rollers of the Hybrid upper roller track. By the way, we have in-store sales for most of the models we carry. Feel free to reach out to me at [email protected] to discuss these options.
