Alan: Hi, I’m Dr. Alan Weidner from ‘Massage-Chair-Relief.com‘ and today I want to talk to you a little bit about 3D versus 4D massage chairs. 3D connotes three dimensions. The three dimensions in space are the x- and y-axes, and the z-axis.

Alan: And the massage chair, most – before the 3D feature came along – most massage chairs were what we would call 2D. The rollers move up and down and side to side along the x- and the y-axes. You did not have a depth adjustment until you added that 3D, that third D, which is the z-axis, and the 3D chairs offered that ability to move the rollers not just up and down and side to side, but forward, deeper in to the spine, or retract them farther away from the spine to adjust the depth, or the intensity, of the massage.

Alan: So, our space, our world, has three dimensions, the x-, y-, and z-axes, that’s pretty much it. Now, chairs have come out saying that they’re 4D. And of course, in marketing, anything that gives you more of something peaks the interest of the buyer. So, people are thinking ‘Well, 4D, I get an extra D,’ they don’t even know what the D is. So, the D is, when you ask the massage chair companies ‘What is the fourth D,’ it’s just speed adjustment. So, what they’re basically saying is, if a chair has 3D, and you add the fourth dimension, which they call it a dimension – I don’t even know why they call it a dimension – it’s just speed of the rollers. If the rollers are already moving up and down, side to side, and forward, and you increase the speed, you haven’t changed the dimension at all. All you’ve done is change the speed of the rollers moving in those various dimensions. So, 4D is really just a marketing term, in my opinion, and the fourth D has everything to do with speed, or rhythm, or the cadence of the rollers.

Alan: It has nothing to do with the dimensions along the x, y, and z, three dimensions, the three Ds that we talked about. So, don’t be fooled by 4D, 4D is a marketing term. All the chairs are basically 3D if they have the ability to move the rollers forward and back in the z-axis, that is a 3D chair, 4D is just a little play on words. So, basically every 3D chair that has a speed adjustment is a 4D chair, but we don’t call them 4D chairs, just certain companies call it 4D, so you think you’re getting something special, you’re getting a 4D, don’t even know what that is. Now you know it’s just a bunch bologna. So, anyway, there’s my take on 3D vs. 4D, but those are dictionary terms that you’re going to learn in the massage chair industry, and you’re going to come across, and this explains it for you.
