In October 2016, Dr. Randi Nidich of Maharishi University in Fairfield, IA engaged in a study of individuals suffering from post traumatic stress disorder. He sought to examine the effects of transcendental meditation on PTSD. Nidich performed this study on prisoners. Half of whom were given a meditation routine while ht other half were the control group. After four months, the meditation group experienced a 47 percent reduction in trauma symptoms. Nidich believes the reduced trauma symptoms was the result of meditation’s association with a reduction in sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) activity.
