Until fairly recently, chronic neck and back pain were afflictions that only affected the elderly. The reality is, after decades of bending, lifting and straining, the bones and tendons in the back start to degrade. However, as the Internet has become a ubiquitous part of life, chiropractors across the country have seen more and more people in their early 20s and 30s coming in seeking treatment for persistent back and neck pain. In fact, the condition has become so prevalent that back and neck specialists have termed it “text neck.”
The condition is so named because sufferers tend to become afflicted with it by holding their heads at an awkward angle while staring down at a work computer or smart phone. If you don’t make it a point to break up your computer or smart phone usage with some stretches or massage, the strain of supporting the weight of your head will cause the muscles and fascia in the back and neck to become stiff and sore. The only upside to text neck is that it’s much easier to treat than other back problems like a protruding disc or a cracked vertebra. By taking steps to relax and stretch your back, you can avoid a world of hurt.
