A Tampa, Florida chiropractor told a local NBC news affiliate that he is seeing more and more cases of tech neck amongst local children. Dr. Michael Sosa of Westchase Chiropractic told the reporter that because teens are spending several hours a day staring down at tablet computers during class time and smart phones at every available opportunity, they are developing the kinds of repetitive neck and back injuries that usually occur much later in life. As mobile technology has increasingly become ubiquitous in our society, so to has there been an increase in incidences of what several medical professionals have termed tech neck.

As an illustration of how serious tech neck is, Dr. Sosa pointed out that he is increasingly seeing patients in their early to mid-20s who have repetitive neck and back injuries that are typically only found in 50 and 60-year-olds. While it is a very serious affliction, preventing tech neck is actually rather easy. When checking your smart phone, position the device in such a way that you don’t have to bend your neck to look at its screen. And if you work in a job that requires you to use a computer, make sure you stop every few hours, stretch and give your neck and back muscles a brief massage. That will help alleviate the tension that can lead to the development of tech neck.
