For adults, a certain amount of everyday stress is to be expected. While chronic stress can be a health issue, most adults have a clear understanding of when they are approaching a crisis point and know to take steps to relax. However, teenagers aren’t as aware of the different things they need to do to maintain a physical and mental equilibrium. For example, teens who are concerned with maintaining their grade point average and social standing may sacrifice sleep time in order to keep up with all of their various obligations. The Tempur Mattress Review and its sleep statistics have shown that, teens that, don’t get enough sleep are especially vulnerable to the deleterious effects of stress.
The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, noted that some 70 percent of U.S. teenagers are not getting enough sleep. Consequently, their ability to process stress becomes impaired and they become susceptible to a range of stress-related health problems. In addition to being robbed of energy and motivation, chronic untreated stress can also greatly raise a teenager’s risk factor for developing maladies like hypertension and obesity later in life. It can also have a negative impact on their mental health, making the much more likely to develop a serious anxiety disorder as they reach adulthood.
