dictionaryAlan: Well, hello, I’m Dr. Alan Weidner from ‘‘ and today for our Massage Chair Dictionary, we are going to define the term shiatsu. I’m sure some of you have heard the term shiatsu, if not all of you, as a form of massage. Not every chair incorporates shiatsu, but some do, and today I’m going to demonstrate shiatsu on the Inada DreamWave chair. Shiatsu basically, the straightforward and strict definition of shiatsu is, finger pressure. So, when you have shiatsu massage mode applied to your spine by a massage therapist, it’s usually kind of like a trigger-point massage, where they kind of work, using finger pressure, on any particular muscle for a while. So, there’s kind of a sustained compression – compression and release, compression and release – of a particular muscle. Well, the massage chair has tried to imitate that, and has done a pretty good job of it. I’ll show you right here on the Inada DreamWave, we’ll zoom in on the rollers. You can see the rollers actually, you can see my hands moving, but imagine that those rollers are working in one particular part of your spine, and they will hit those muscles.

Alan: In the DreamWave, it actually does scan you with enough sophistication that it can figure out where these areas are on your spine, and then it’ll roll down and move to the next area where that same motion will occur to the muscle. So, it’s basically finding a portion of, an area of the spine, where the muscles are tight, and then the rollers kind of just work on jabbing, compressing and decompressing, on that musculature to help release the muscle spasm. So, that is shiatsu, so when you hear shiatsu, you know what that is, and when you hear about it on a massage chair, or if you’re looking for it in a massage chair, now you know what it is that you are looking for, and you’ll understand what the chair does when it has a program, or a manual function called ‘Shiatsu.’ So, I hope that you found this video helpful.
