A study that was recently published in the brain and behavior journal produced a number of interesting findings. First, it was found that roughly 8 percent of the North American population is afflicted with some form of anxiety disorder. That’s double the global average of 4 percent and nearly 3 the rate found in East Asia.
It was also found that women, particularly those under the age of 35, are nearly twice as likely to be diagnosed with anxiety disorders as men. Researchers believe the disproportional rate of anxiety diagnosis is due to the hormonal changes women go through after giving birth and when going through menopause.
In addition to seeking the assistance of a qualified mental health professional, the researchers who conducted the study also suggested addressing this serious mental health issue through holistic means. In practice, this means doing things that will mitigate the effects of an anxiety disorder, such as maintaining a balanced diet, exercising regularly and engaging in activities that are deeply relaxing, is also know to relieve symptoms of menopause in holistic way.
While there is no one activity that is proven to be relaxing to all individuals, doing things like meditating, practicing yoga, dancing, listening to relaxing music, hanging out with friends and family and regularly partaking in massage sessions have all been found to be highly effective at reducing stress, menopausal symptoms, and anxiety in both men and woman.
