Obesity may prolong survival for kidney cancer patients

Research has associated obesity as a factor that puts people at greater risk for cancer. This includes an increased risk for kidney cancer for people who are obese. Interestingly, however, once you have kidney cancer if you are obese research has shown that you may live up to 9 months longer on average than someone who has a lower BMI (Body Mass Index). A gene called FASN had less expression in those who were obese and this gene has been present in various types of cancers.

Key Takeaways:

  • Studies have shown that individuals with a high BMI are at greater risk for numerous cancers, and kidney cancer is one of them
  • Being overweight or obese following a cancer diagnosis is associated with poorer chances of survival.
  • Survival has been increased by 9 months for overweight kidney cancer patients.

“the findings of a new study may come as a surprise; for patients with kidney cancer, being overweight or obese appeared to significantly increase their chances of survival.”
