The most important step in managing bone pain is to treat the disease, says oncologist William Bensinger, MD, of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. “Treat the myeloma, because if you can eliminate the abnormal plasma cells from the marrow spaces, you relieve the pressure from the bone and the pain on that basis,” explains Dr. Bensinger. “And by treating myeloma successfully, you can eliminate the source of the hormone that leads to bone destruction.”
