A new study out of Loyola University has found that women are 1.38 times more likely to experience neck pain than men. The reason why has to do the different types of neck pain that affect men and women. One of the more common causes of back pain in both men and women is disc degeneration in the lumbar spine, which is a condition that is caused by inflicting decades of wear and tear on the tissue that connects the spinal column in the lower back. However, the Loyola study found that women have a higher risk factor of contracting cervical degenerative disc disease, a disorder that affects spinal connective tissue in the neck area.
While the stiffness and pain caused by cervical degenerative disc disease can be debilitating, a number of treatment options exist. First off, their preventive measures like taking breaks from activities that require you to keep your neck in the same position for hours at a time, such as clerical work or watching television. Another method involves conservative care, using ice packs or ointments to relieve pain. And more recently, a number of studies have found that low-impact exercise and regular massages have been highly effective at reducing pain and restoring mobility for sufferers of degenerative disc related illnesses.
