Massage Chair Industry Update – January 15, 2014

news micAlan: Well, hello, I’m Dr. Alan Weidner from ‘‘ and today is our biweekly massage chair industry update for January 15th, 2014. The new year is well underway, I hope you’re all having a great new year so far. We’ve got a lot of things to cover today, moreso than we did a couple of weeks ago. After the holidays, things are usually a little quiet, a little subdued, but things are starting to get busy again, and we’ve got some things to go over. Well, first of all, as usual, we’ll talk about stock status.

[SCREEN TEXT: Interior Black Iyashi Discontinued]

Alan: I found out, I had an order for a ‘Black’ Iyashi, the black interior Iyashi, and I was told that they have discontinued that color. I guess the demand for it was not that great, which surprises me, I thought that the ‘Black’ would be a big hit, and I did sell a number of ‘Blacks’ before the end of the year, but it looks like the ‘Black’ Iyashi is out of stock.

Alan: Also, the IT-9800 in ‘Brown’ is out of stock from Infinite Therapeutics, and it’s going to be about 90 days before the ‘Brown’ comes in again. Apparently, the other colors are in stock, but in very, very low supply. I asked them if they were discontinuing this model, and they said no, but I wonder if perhaps that is on the horizon for the 9800. I don’t know how popular of a chair it is, it’s a very good chair, it’s a Taiwanese-built chair, I’ve done videos on it, I’ve written a couple of reviews about it. It’s a good chair, I like it, but maybe with the success of the 8500 and the Iyashi, maybe its days are numbered, but that’s just me speculating, I don’t know if that’s exactly true or not. Anyway, those are out of stock. The Osaki chairs seem to be all in pretty good stock shape right now, from what I understand. I know they just got a new shipment in this week with new Cybers and Dreamers, and I believe, the 4000s, and everything seems to be either in stock or coming in very shortly. Mid-January to late January is when most of these chairs are going to be in stock again. From what I understand, the Panasonic chairs, the Inada chairs, Cozzia chairs, the Omega, they’re all in stock right now, so it’s actually a really good time to buy. Of course, it’s after the rush of the New Year’s, and the Christmas, and the holiday season, but there is good stock available.

[SCREEN TEXT: Silver Accents Now Faux Wood on OS-3D Pro Dreamer]

Alan: Alright, I have new images of the Osaki OS-3D Pro Dreamer up on our website, and the reason we have new pictures up is because – originally, if you’ll notice the old pictures, I don’t have these pictures up anymore – but the old pictures, like the current 7200CR and the 7200H, the color of the chair, on the sides of the chairs, is usually ‘Black,’ ‘Brown,’ ‘Charcoal,’ or ‘Ivory,’ or ‘Creme,’ and it would have silver accent lines through the armrests, and along the headpiece, or the little dome that covers the head on the CR and on the Dreamer. Well, on the Dreamer, that silver strip, that silver accent strip has been changed to faux wood, so it’s a dark, wood-looking, the kind of wood you’d see maybe in a car dash, in an automobile car dash. So, they changed that to give it a little bit more of a classy look, and I put those pictures up. It actually is a nice look, it’s not a bad look, but some people still prefer the silver accent, which apparently is not in stock anymore. So, just FYI about the Dreamer, you may have looked at it before, and seen the way it looked, but it has changed, FYI.

[SCREEN TEXT: Make-A-Wish Update!]

Alan: Let’s see, oh, our Make-A-Wish Foundation – you know, I’m really enjoying the Make-A-Wish Foundation project – this has been something that’s been near and dear to my heart for a few years, we’ve been wanting to implement it in our business, and we finally got that done in 2013. Our goal was to hit $7500, as of today, our goal is – I think we’re at $30, $3350, so we’re at 45% of our goal – and so I think we’re going to hit the goal of $7500 long before the one year, which would be November 1st is when we began, so by October 31st, I suspect that we’ll be well past $7500, and we’ll up the goal for the next year, maybe to $10,000, something like that.


Alan: I want to thank those of you who purchased chairs from me because we donate a portion of every chair to this Make-A-Wish Foundation project, and to a wish child, and the current wish child that we have, who we have, is Samantha, and Samantha is just a dear little girl. You can see the picture on our website, and I’ll put the URL, on our website, to our Make-A-Wish page up there. From there, you can go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation website, where we have our page there where you can actually make the donations. Well anyway, I got an update last week from Make-A-Wish that Samantha’s wish has been granted to her. Her wish was that she would like to be able to have a backyard shade space, like a patio, where she could be in the shade, and sitting in her wheelchair, and enjoy the weather, the sounds of the birds, and all the beautiful things that accompany being outside without being in the hot sun, and apparently that has been granted to her. The cash – there were donations given in kind, which means that people would donate the wood, or the nails, or whatever it is that was needed, or donate in the service of putting the deck together – and then there was also a cash component that was needed to buy certain things, and that cash component was around $5100. So, our goal, even though Samantha’s dream has been granted, our goal is to meet that $5100, so that that is paid up in full for Samantha’s wish, and then once that $5100 has been reached and I suspect we’ll probably reach that in another month or two, then we will have a new wish child that we can help grant a wish to.

So, this has been wonderful, I get a little emotional when I talk about it, so I don’t want to talk too much more about it, but you can see the picture of Samantha with her family. On our website Make-A-Wish page, there’s a picture of Samantha in her wheelchair, when you click on the link to the Make-A-Wish page, from that page, you will see a picture of her family gathered around her on the patio deck that was built for them with her in the center of the family. It’s a precious picture, and it’s just so exciting to know that we, as a massage chair family, I mean, a Massage-Chair-Relief family, have made this possible for this young lady. So anyway, thank you, when you do purchase a chair, just keep in the back of your mind the thought that ‘Hey, this is helping out a child that has a terminal illness.’ OK, so that’s enough of the Make-A-Wish for today.

Alan: Let’s see OK, I wrote a few article posts, I mean, a few blog posts, on my article library, and I thought that you might find them interesting. The one I just wrote yesterday, which got a very, very good response, was – I entitled it ‘Why is the IT-8500 So Dang Popular?‘ and you know, that chair is popular, and I kind of in a nutshell listed all the points that – why it is so popular, what makes this chair so popular, I listed eight things that this chair has, including a very, very good price. I wrote that yesterday, and it’s about 900 words, it’s not a terribly long read, but go ahead and take a look in the article library, on our blog, and you can see that article. It’s a good article, it’ll tell you why the 8500 is so popular, and it may help you decide if the 8500 is the right chair for you.

Alan: Also, I wrote, I put – we had an infographic made for the Osaki OS-3D Pro Dreamer, that’s up, as well, on our blog, you can take a look at that. You can copy and paste, you can copy the code, it’s at the bottom of every infographic that we have on our blog, or our article library, however you want to call it. There’s a little area of code, and you can copy and paste that code on to your website, on to another blog, I think you might even be able to post it to Facebook, I’m not sure, but you can post this. We just ask that you keep the infographic in its entirety, don’t cut out any of the code. Please feel free to share that infographic with anybody you know, or on your website, or wherever, it’s free to share.

[SCREEN TEXT: Warranty Support in a Small Town?]

Alan: Also, I had, you know, we get so many email requests from people, email questions I get, and I’ve got to tell you, some of the people that ask questions, they’re just great questions, and things that I would never think of, or that I’d thought of, but I just never thought to write about. Well, one fellow wrote about his concern for him living in a small town, somewhere in the USA, you know, not near a big hub. He’s worried about what’ll happen if there’s a problem with his chair and the company that he bought his chair from – whether it be Osaki, or Infinite Therapeutics, or Inada, or Human Touch, or Omega, or Cozzia – how are they going to have somebody there come and fix his chair. Well, this is how it works, and I talked about this in the ‘Mailbag,’ which is, you know, we usually add one or two or three emails in a ‘Mailbag,’ of questions that people ask, and my answers to them, and this was one of the questions. So, the answer is this, pretty much all the massage chair companies, all the ones that we carry, have an in-home warranty, either one year, two year, or three years. Now, that in-home warranty means that the company will mail you a part, if it needs a part, and if it needs a technician to replace it, they will outsource to a third-party group that will do the repair. Whether it’s Service USA or Jez Enterprises, there’s two or three companies around the country that have a network of technicians that have some training in, of course, technical dealings with electronic devices, like massage chairs, or whatever other device. The massage chair company gets in touch with that technician, and sends, you know, schematics, or a video, or whatever, or instructions on how to replace that part for that chair, and so that’s how they do it. So, if you live in, well, like here in Utah, let’s say you live in like, Fairview, Utah, which is a little town where we have a customer and it’s, you know, maybe an hour away from Salt Lake, how does someone come out there. Well, they’ll outsource, and if it’s, let’s say it’s Inada – Inada will commission the repair work to a local person here, maybe in Salt Lake, or in Provo, or one of the bigger cities along I-15 here, and they’ll just take the half hour ride out there and go – or an hour, or whatever it is, and go do the work. That’s how it’s done, so it doesn’t matter if you live in a small town, there will be technicians somewhere near you that will be able to come out there and do the work for you. So, that was a great question, and something that, of course, I know and understand because I deal with it every day with people who have issues – but I’d never explained it to anyone before, on these recordings, and I think it’s a great way to – this is a good medium to purvey that information to you, the prospective buyer.

[SCREEN TEXT: Johnson J6800 – New Colors!]

Alan: OK, let’s see, the J6800 from Johnson has come out with a bunch of new colors, and you know what, I feel a little bad, I have been remiss in getting the Johnson feature set up on the website. I thought I had it up, but it fell through the cracks, and it’s not been done. We should get that done very soon, but we did add four new colors from Johnson, there’s an ‘Ivory’ J6800, a ‘Beige,’ a ‘Wine,’ and a ‘Brown.’ The cover picture that we have, the default picture, is the ‘Wine’ color, which I thought was a beautiful color, and that’s why we chose it, it’s a really nice looking deep burgundy, you know, well, a wine color, it’s a very, very nice color. So anyway, the J6800 from Johnson Wellness now has those color options, before it was just ‘Black,’ now it has some other options, some other color options.

[SCREEN TEXT: 1-Month Old Panasonic MA70 & Inada Sogno For Sale]

Alan: Let’s see, anything else that we’ve got to cover today, that I have not mentioned, oh yes, I’ve got a couple of used chairs. Now, of course, we don’t get a lot of returns throughout the course of the year. The percentage of returns is pretty low, but at Christmas time and during the holiday season where our sales really go up, well, we do get more returns, and so we have a couple from the holidays. One is a Panasonic MA70 in ‘Black,’ and it retails for $6999, we’re going to be selling that chair for – and it’s only a month old, it’s in perfect condition, it’s ‘Black’ in color, it still has the three-year, parts-and-labor warranty that comes with a Panasonic chair – and we’ll be selling that one for $5495, and that is a very, very low price.

Also, I’ve got an Inada Sogno ‘Creme’ colored chair coming back – and by the way, both these chairs, the Panasonic and the Inada Sogno were sold to people who bought it for either – I think the Panasonic was bought for a mother-in-law, and the Sogno was bought for a wife. Nobody had ever tried the chair out in the family, and usually the person that gets the chair, either they don’t want the chair, or they don’t like the chair, or there’s something, or whatever, or massage hurts, or whatever the case may be. Usually it’s someone who has never sat on a chair, never tried one out, and it was thought to be a cool gift, but the person doesn’t really like massage, and I get that, there’s some people that just can’t stand being massaged. Not in our home, though, not in our home, we love it. So anyway, we have this Sogno, it’s a ‘Creme’ colored Sogno coming back. Again, it’s only about a month old, pristine condition, perfect condition, and we’ll be selling that one for $7299, and that still has the three-year, parts-and-labor warranty, in home, just like the Panasonic chair, and that’s a ‘Creme’ colored Sogno, which is kind of their flagship color. Of course, you know the Sogno retails for $7999, so you’re getting, you know, $700 off on a chair that’s not even a month old. It was delivered, I think, right, the day after Christmas, two days after Christmas, so the chair’s not even, what, three weeks old. They are packed in their original packaging, they are sealed down for shipping, they’re in good shape, there should be no problems whatsoever with these chairs.
