How Stress & Depression Increase Risk of Death

Not to scare you, but severe stress and depression can take a dangerous toll on your health, especially if you have heart problems, according to a new study. The people tested in the study had high levels of stress and depression and were 48% more likely to die or have a heart attack during the study period compared to those who had low levels.

The combination of stress and depression creates what researchers call a “psychosocial perfect storm” for people who already have heart problems. In fact, after a six-year follow-up, there were 1,337 deaths or heart attacks among the people in the study, even though only 274 of them reported having both high stress and high depression.

The study also noted that people who only reported high stress or high depression, but not both, did not have an increased risk of death or heart attack.
