Gut Bacteria May Hold Clues to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Proof that Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is not a psychological disease has been found by researchers. People diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome have a high level of bad bacteria in their gut. This bad bacteria encourages inflammation. Some people are able to combat this bacteria with good bacteria that discourages inflammation in the form of probiotics.

Key Takeaways:

  • Patients with chronic fatigue syndrome have a different profile of bacterial species in their gut microbiome than healthy individuals
  • Not everyone with chronic fatigue syndrome has the skewed microbiome. Some of the study volunteers had fairly normal microbiomes.
  • More and more research on various health conditions has focused on what experts call the gut-brain axis

“Chronic fatigue syndrome — a condition that continues to baffle doctors — may be influenced by a person’s intestinal bacteria — sometimes called gut microbiome, new research finds.”
