Often times when discussing stress the conversation tends to focus on ways you can manage the amount of stress in your life. To achieve that goal, it’s often suggested that you should stop participating in non-work activities that only serve to increase your stress level. It’s also not uncommon to see recommendations regarding dietary changes you can make that will put less stress on your body. However, what’s not talked about often enough is the concept of preparing yourself for the inevitability of stress. Instead of trying to figure out ways to escape from stress, it might be more beneficial to figure out how you can build up your resiliency.
In psychological terms, resilience refers to a person’s ability to handle adversity. As explained in this Harvard Business Review piece, a person can increase the resiliency by strengthening their bonds with friends and family members, exercising regularly eating right and regularly engaging in relaxing activities. There’s no way around the anxiety you’ll feel about completing an important work project. But, if you make it a point to schedule a massage on the day the project is due, you can take some stress out of the situation. Regardless of the projects reception, knowing that a relaxing and reinvigorating massage is waiting for you will help you put things in perspective.
