Massage chairs can arrive in different ways depending on the model. Some chairs come fully assembled in one large box. With these chairs, the main concern is making sure the box can fit through the doorways and hallways needed to reach the room where you plan to place it.

Other chairs require assembly and typically arrive in two or three boxes. The main box contains the chair body, while the second and third boxes usually include the armrests and the leg rest. In some cases, the leg rest comes pre-attached, which means there may only be two boxes.

Generally, less expensive chairs are smaller, lighter, and easier to move. These chairs often fit into a single box and are much easier to handle. Premium chairs, on the other hand, have more components and features, which is why they cost more. Because of their size and weight, premium chairs usually arrive partially disassembled, making it easier to move the individual components into the room.

The chair body is the heaviest part and is the component you’ll most likely need help moving through doorways. In fact, the chair body of a premium model is often heavier than an entire fully assembled entry-level chair.

Assembly itself is usually not overwhelming. Many retailers offer white-glove delivery, which includes in-home delivery and setup for an additional fee. However, many people choose to assemble the chair themselves. Instructions are included in the owner’s manual, and there are also YouTube assembly videos available for most popular models.

The most challenging part is getting the chair body—or the fully assembled chair—into the room where it will be used. You’ll probably need some extra muscle for that step. Once the chair is in place, simply follow the instructions in the manual or watch a video, and the rest of the assembly is straightforward.

I consider myself one of the worst handymen I know, and even I can assemble a massage chair by following the instructions. It typically takes about 45 minutes to an hour to complete.

So, that’s the story with massage chair assembly. Some chairs require no assembly at all, while most higher-end, heavier, premium chairs do require some assembly—but it’s usually quite manageable.
