Hi, I’m Dr. Alan Weidner from Massage Chair Relief, and today I want to talk about something most people don’t even think about when shopping for a massage chair.
When I first started in this business in 2005, the people who came into our showroom were typically dealing with back pain, neck pain, mid-back pain, or sciatica. Those were the primary complaints that brought customers in.
Over the years, however, things have changed quite a bit.
Of course, massage chairs still help with low back pain, mid-back pain, headaches, neck aches, shoulder pain, sciatica, and even discomfort in the arms, wrists, ankles, and feet. But what many people don’t realize is how many customers now purchase a chair for non-symptomatic reasons—things like relaxation, stress relief, anxiety reduction, improved sleep, and overall wellness.
Recently, I conducted a survey among our customers. We received about 300 responses from people who had purchased chairs from us. It was a simple two-question survey.
The first question was: What brought you to the point of wanting to buy a massage chair?
I listed all the common symptoms—sciatica, back pain, neck pain, etc.—along with non-symptomatic reasons such as wellness, stress relief, relaxation, and better sleep. Respondents were asked to select all that applied.
The second question was: Did you receive the relief or benefit you were seeking after purchasing the chair?
I wasn’t surprised that back pain was the number one reason. Mid-back, neck, and shoulder pain followed closely behind.
What truly surprised me was how many people selected relaxation, stress relief, better sleep, and overall wellness. In fact, when combined, those non-symptomatic reasons were extremely close to—if not exceeding—the number of people who purchased primarily for pain relief.
Even more impressive was this: 92% of respondents said they received the relief or benefit they were looking for—whether it was pain reduction, stress relief, or improved relaxation.
That statistic was striking. I had always assumed most buyers were pain sufferers. But we’re now seeing a growing number of younger individuals purchasing chairs primarily to manage stress. And let’s face it—we live in a high-paced, high-pressure world. Stress levels are high, and people are feeling it.
If you want to relax, a massage chair can do that.
I have one at home, and whenever we have family gatherings, my kids and grandkids line up to use it. Within minutes, they’re either asleep or in such a relaxed state that they don’t want to be disturbed. That’s the power of a massage chair.
Yes, it can help with back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, and headaches. But it can also promote relaxation, reduce stress and anxiety, improve sleep, and contribute to overall wellness.
There’s a lot more to a massage chair than simply relieving back pain.
