Can massage chairs help scoliosis? Most people have heard the term “scoliosis,” but many are not familiar with what it actually means. Ideally, your spine should align in a straight line from the base of your skull down to your lower back. However, not everyone’s spine is perfectly straight. Some people have a slight curve to one side or the other, which may be considered a very mild form of scoliosis.
In more significant cases, the spine curves abnormally to the side. The severity of this curvature is measured using what is called a Cobb angle, which helps determine whether someone has scoliosis and how severe it is.
Many cases of scoliosis in children resolve on their own, according to research. Some cases may worsen over time, and others may require treatment such as surgery or the use of Harrington rods to help straighten the spine. Essentially, scoliosis is an abnormal side-to-side curvature of the spine when viewed from the front or back.
Can a massage chair correct scoliosis? No, it cannot. However, a massage chair can help address the muscular issues associated with scoliosis. When the spine curves, the surrounding muscles often become imbalanced. Some muscles become overly tight, while others may become weaker or looser because of the uneven curvature. These patterns can also reverse in different areas along the spine.
A massage chair can help by working the muscles, loosening tight areas, breaking up scar tissue, improving circulation, and reducing muscle tension and spasms along both sides of the spine. While massage chairs may improve comfort and muscle condition, they will not correct the spinal curvature itself. There is currently no research suggesting that massage chairs can cure or reverse scoliosis.
