Sometimes, when you sit in a massage chair—especially if it’s your first time—you may notice that one of the rollers seems to “snap” or bounce as it moves along one side of your spine. It can feel like one roller isn’t working properly.

While that’s possible, more often than not, the chair isn’t the problem—your muscles are.

Many people have muscle imbalances along their spine, where one side is tighter than the other. This is especially common in people with scoliosis or chronic muscle tension. One side of the back may feel flatter, while the muscles on the other side are tighter and more rope-like.

As the massage rollers move over those tighter muscles, they can create a snapping or plucking sensation—almost like plucking a guitar string.

That doesn’t necessarily mean there’s anything wrong with the rollers. In many cases, it simply means the chair has found an area of increased muscle tension.

As you continue using the massage chair over time, those muscle imbalances may begin to relax. Many people notice that the snapping sensation gradually disappears as the muscles become more balanced and less tense. That’s often a sign the chair is having a positive effect—not that it was malfunctioning in the first place.

Now, if you experience that sensation in every massage chair you try, it’s a good indication that the issue is related to your back or your muscles rather than the chair itself.

On the other hand, if it only happens in one specific chair while every other chair feels normal, then that particular chair may have a mechanical issue that should be inspected.

This is something we see fairly often with visitors to our showroom, so I wanted to mention it in case you experience the same thing.
