Massage Chair History: Electric and Modern Options

In part one of this two-part blog series, we went over some of the earliest history of the massage chair in popular society. Massage therapy itself can be traced back thousands of years, but it wasn’t until recent generations, in the mid-1900s to be specific, that massage chairs we’re familiar with today were invented and popularized.

At Massage Chair Relief, we’re happy to offer a wide range of massage chair options, from brands like Daiwa massage chairs to numerous others that fit all your massage and comfort needs. Today’s part two of our series will dig into a few additional bits of history on the massage chair, including the invention of the electric chair and how these early innovations gave way to the modern massage chair options available today.

Electric Massage Chair

As we noted in part one, massage chairs were invented in the 1950s and began to become popular by the early part of this decade. In 1954, another important benchmark was crossed: A Japanese man named Nobuo Fujimoto invented the first electric massage chair, using scrap materials and several iterations before arriving at his final version. This was a major breakthrough in massage chairs, allowing for much more convenience and consistency from the chair using electric power rather than mechanical means.

Modern Chair Options

Over the years since these initial developments, various massage chair types have been developed and improved. Generally speaking, the modern massage chair realm features two broad varieties:

  • Traditional chairs: Portable, ergonomic chairs that you typically see in massage therapy facilities and similar areas. These have no mechanical or electric parts, but are rather meant to support the person being massaged while a massage therapist performs their services.
  • Robotic chairs: Available in a huge range of styles and massage options, robotic massage chairs are what we primarily offer at Massage Chair Relief. These chairs have controls that allow you to adjust all the settings of your massage, from the intensity to the type and location. These chairs look somewhat like recliners, with comfortable setups meant to keep you relaxed while simulating some of the natural motions of a massage therapist.

Technological Advances

And over the decades since the first electric massage chairs were invented, we’ve come quite a long way. Modern massage chairs have numerous different massage techniques pre-programmed, plus technology to make every touch feel more and more like a human’s. They also feature elements like L-Track technology and others to target specific muscles, plus those that offer Bluetooth and other sound experience tech. In addition, there are space-saving formats for massage chairs that remove their bulky reputation and allow them to be placed almost anywhere in a home or business.
