The Beginner’s Guide to Mobility & Stretching

Seashells
Seashells

Many men skip stretching and working on their mobility. This can be detrimental to their workout as stretching helps in arms like recovery time and allowing the muscles to take on more strain. One type of stretching is dynamic stretching, in which you gradually work to stretch muscles over a series of smaller movements. Another type is static stretching, in which you stretch and hold the position. Several stretches include: tricep stretches, shoulder stretches, quad stretches, hip flexor stretches, single-leg hamstring stretches, and glute stretches.

Key Takeaways:

  • A static stretch is pretty much exactly as the name implies, a stretch that is held for at least fifteen seconds.
  • A static stretch lasts until the muscle is tight and then released for a short break.
  • When one starts the next set of static stretches the goal is invariably to stretch just a little bit further than before.

“Dynamic stretching consists of movements with a progressive range of motion each time.”

New Massage Chair Warranty Registration

Warrantly
Warrantly

This topic is a bit mundane, but it is something that comes up quite regularly when discussing new massage chairs with customers. This is something that no one really thinks about until a new chair is received and/or a warranty issue arises with a new chair…THEN it’s important!

Every chair we sell comes with a “factory” warranty, which is not really a factory warranty but actually warranty coverage offered by the US distributor of the chairs, be it Osaki, Infinity, DreamWave, Panasonic, Human Touch, etc. Each company assigns a warranty period to each model they carry.

For pretty much every company we represent, your receipt from us (or from whatever retailer you decide to purchase your new chair) acts as proof of warranty. Some companies will also send out a postcard with their chairs that you are asked to fill out and send back to them, or will include a link through which you can register your chair. And, I do recommend that you fill out those cards and follow the registration link. But your receipt from the retailer will serve as verification of your warranty.

When you call to open a warranty ticket for a chair problem, you may be asked by the distributor for proof of purchase. That would be the receipt you received from your retailer. They will also, most likely, ask for the serial number of your chair (which can be found at the bottom of the back of the chair). If you purchased your chair from us and have misplaced the receipt, let us know and we can send you another copy. This would be a good time to remind you to keep your original copy of the receipt from your purchase!

One of the areas of concern for customers is when they purchase an extended warranty in addition to the factory warranty. Most companies do not send out any verification of the extended warranty purchase. Once again, your receipt that shows an included extended warranty purchase will serve as your proof of purchase of said extended warranty. Your retailer should also have a receipt from the distributor showing that they purchased the extended warranty for you.

So, in summary, the bottom line when it comes to massage chair warranty registration is:

  1. Keep your receipt from the retailer at the time purchase.
  2. If you purchased an additional extended warranty from the retailer (you do not,  and, in most cases, cannot purchase an extended warranty from the distributor), make sure that it is included on your purchase receipt.
  3. If you receive a warranty registration postcard or link from the distributor with the delivery of your chair, fill it out just to cover all your bases.

This would be a great place to mention that if you have a chair problem, and require warranty support, you ultimately must call the massage chair distributor to open a “ticket” for parts & service. You can call us for the right phone number or for any input on what your chair is doing wrong, but it is the distributor that takes care of the warranty support.

Once the factory and extended warranties have expired, you will still be covered by our own Peace of Mind Lifetime Labor Warranty. In the event that you have a problem with your chair at that time, you should give us a call but you will still call the distributor for diagnosis of the problem and for parts (again, contact us if you need a phone number to the distributor of your chair). Then, once you have the parts in hand, call Massage Chair Relief to get a tech sent out to do the work. That is how our Lifetime Labor Warranty works. Because you purchased a chair from us, you are automatically covered for that warranty. We just have to verify that you are one of our customers when you reach out to us.

FDA Approved Massage Chairs? Really?? Don’t Believe It!

square grunge red fda approved stamp
square grunge red fda approved stamp

If you have read any of my articles or watched any of my Massage Chair Industry Update videos in the past, you know that there are certain things that I consider my “pet peeves” in the massage chair industry. Topics like 4D vs. 3D massage chairs, chromotherapy, and no-name brand marketing tactics. Well, the subject of “FDA Approved” massage chairs is another one.

FDA & Medical Devices Background

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has specific grading standards and protocols in place to determine if a new medical device or product, that claims a health benefit, is a Class I, Class II, or Class III product and, thus, requires FDA approval of that product for the US marketplace and consumer. Of course, these grades and approvals are designed to make sure the products are safe and do not pose a potential danger or threat to the American consumer. They are in place to protect you and me.

According to www.fda.gov, examples of Class I devices present minimal potential harm to the user and include products like “enema kits and elastic bandages.” Examples of Class II devices include “powered wheelchairs and some pregnancy test kit” and have a higher risk.  Class III devices usually sustain or support life, are implanted, or present potential unreasonable risk of illness or injury. They can include products like “implantable pacemakers and breast implants.”

95% of Class I devices are “exempt from the regulatory process” and, thus, do not require FDA approval. 10% of medical devices are considered Class III do require the FDA approval. 43% of medical devices fall under the Class II category. Some of them require FDA approval and some don’t.

What Does FDA Approval Entail?

Approval involves notifying the FDA with the intent to market a Class III and, in some cases, a Class II medical device. Those companies seeking approval must first submit a PreMarket Approval (PMA) application or 510(k). The FDA will determine if the medical device seeking approval is “substantially equivalent (as safe and effective) to a device already on the market.” If the device is considered “substantially equivalent”, then the manufacturer can market the device. If it is not, then the approval process continues.

Massage chairs are considered Class I devices, therefore they DO NOT require FDA approval. They do not require a PMA or 510(k) application. If you see any advertisement from any massage chair company that says “FDA Approved”, rest assured you are seeing a classic example of false advertising!!

FDA Approval vs. FDA Registration (a big difference!)

Now, let’s talk about “registration” of a product with the FDA, which is not an “approval” by the FDA. From what I got in my research (online search and phone conversation with an FDA medical device rep), any medical device can be registered by a manufacturer or a US rep for a foreign manufacturer. Registration is a simple process that involves divulging information about the company submitting the registration, submitting the products that are being registered, and an annual renewal fee.

I went through the www.fda.gov site and searched for massage chair company registrations. I saw Family Inada, Human Touch, Luraco Technologies, Infinity, and Osaki Titan as listed massage chair companies. I also saw the manufacturing plant for the Cozzia and Ogawa (and, I assume Fujimedic) massage chairs. So, from what I gathered by reviewing those registrations, either the US distributor of the massage chairs or a US contact person for a foreign manufacturing facility can register the medical devices.

The Bottom Line

The bottom line is this: there are no massage chairs that are FDA Approved for the simple reason that they are Class I medical devices and do not require FDA Approval to be marketed in the USA. However, massage chair companies can and do register their company and their medical devices with the FDA by paying a fee and renewing that fee annually. That DOES NOT mean their chairs are FDA Approved. They are quite simply just registered with the FDA. I would say it’s safe to say that most, if not all, massage chair companies in the USA are registered with the FDA. So, when you see a company state that it and it’s products are FDA registered, know that most are and it is nothing unique to that company or products.

So, if you see an advertisement of a massage chair that says “FDA Approved”, just know that it is false advertising and completely misleading. Don’t be afraid to call out companies that do that! Also, if you see an advertisement of a massage that says “FDA Registered”, know that most, if not all, already are. If you doubt the veracity of their claim, just ask for their registration number and you can look it up on www.fda.gov.

Fake Massage Chair Reviews!

online reviews
online reviews

If you have followed my Massage Chair Industry Update videos for any amount of time, you know that I have some pet peeves about my industry that I believe need to be resolved before we have optimal credibility among our customer base. One of my pet peeves has been, and will continue to be, fake massage chair reviews.

Are Reviews Important?

For most customers, reviews play a critical role in the decision making process. Have you checked out reviews before purchasing a product, massage chair or not? Of course you have. The consumer trusts the reviews implicitly. I also used to trust the reviews I read. Well, I learned in this industry that fake reviews are rampant and they are influencing how you spend your hard earned money. The interesting thing is that you most likely have no idea if a review is real or fake or paid.

I’d like to give you a dramatic example of how important customer reviews are to product retailers. This story was relayed to us by one of our customers. This customer purchased a chair from us after having left a small deposit on a chair from another massage chair company that imports and carries it’s own brand of chairs. After having paid the deposit, this customer decided to do an online search of the company to which she was about to pay thousands of dollars.

A Perfect Massage Chair? No Such A Thing!

Her search led her to a bunch of reviews about the company and their chairs. Review after review touted how great the chair was. She didn’t find one negative review about the chair or the company. Every model, and every feature, were perfect. That was her first red flag. I have to agree with her. I sell some of the finest massage chairs in the world, like Inada, Panasonic, and Luraco and I have yet to find a chair that pleases everyone! Most folks love their chairs but, if you read our reviews, you will see that there is not one chair that pleases everyone 100%. There is always one thing that the customer doesn’t like about their chair or wishes it had. Since I started Massage Chair Relief in 2004, I have learned that there isn’t a chair that makes everyone happy all the time.

Fake Reviews = Red Flag

Well, this red flag motivated my customer to look further into the subject of product reviews and how legitimate or trustworthy they really are. She found out that there are companies out there that will write fake reviews that look real as though they are written by real customers. This ploy is done to boost review ratings on a site like Amazon or Yelp. Her search also led to FakeSpot, a free app designed to grade reviews and let you know what percentage of reviews of a product on Amazon and Yelp are perceived as fake or paid. It also gives the product and company a letter grade. I don’t know how the app actually does what it does or what it’s algorithm involves, but I’ve tested it and seen how well it works.

She was shocked to find that 97% of the reviews of the company and it’s chairs, from which she was about to commit thousands of dollars, were either fake or paid and that they were graded an F!

What Will A Retailer Do To Prevent A Negative Review?

Here is where the story gets good! Once my customer decided that she didn’t trust the company that sold her the chair, she called to cancel her order and get her deposit back. The company tried to tell her that her deposit was non-refundable, although that was never mentioned to her when she originally paid it. The conversation led to an argument because the rep claimed he had told our customer that the deposit was non-refundable at the time of the order. Our customer did not recall that at all (by the way, the deposit was only $100, a relatively small amount compared to the $8000 price tag of the chair). He told her that it was “[her] word against his.” The rep went on to say that if the customer wrote a bad review, that “you’d be sorry”, which our customer felt was some form of a threat. She eventually got her deposit back.

But, wait, there’s more! Our customer actually did decide to write a review on Yelp sharing her experience. Shortly thereafter she received a call from Yelp saying that someone had contacted Yelp to tell them that our customer was basically a shill from another massage chair company trying to destroy this company’s reputation by writing a negative review.  They called her to find out if it was true. Of course it wasn’t.

Here’s the kicker…someone from the company eventually called her to apologize for all the hassle and offered her a free chair if she would just remove her negative review. That didn’t help the situation at all for our customer. It infuriated her even more because she felt that the company was trying to censor her real life experience and manipulate the review results.

I share this example to demonstrate how important reviews are not only to you the consumer, but to us the retailers. But, we need to encourage and appreciate truthful reviews and deal with the negative ones in a positive way. During my 14 years in this business, we have received a few negative reviews which, quite frankly, actually led to corrective measures in my company to prevent those issues from ever happening again. The lesson for businesses from this experience is: rather than deny accountability and coerce the consumer to remove their review, listen and learn and make the changes in your company to never receive that type of review again.

I just read an interesting news article discussing how the FTC is cracking down on fake and paid reviews to protect the consumer. Good stuff!

Rare gene mutation gives rise to low sensitivity to physical problems

flowing water
flowing water

People are looking for new ways to deal with physical problems. The truth of the matter is that we have to figure out the cause of these problems. Rare genetic mutations may be a very big reason for the extreme problems, and the truth of the matter is that we need to keep that reality in mind. If people don’t look at these mutations, then they won’t be able to get to the root cause of many kinds of physical issues.

Key Takeaways:

  • Physical problem sensitivity is something that we all have to deal with as it can make it very difficult to walk.
  • Physical sensitivity can make it harder for people to do basic things like writing as well. This also makes it harder to type.
  • People want to be able to find a way to make sure that they can get everything set up and try to find a way to make sure that they can manage all the medical accounts that are tied to physical problem management.

“One such area of research is congenital hypoalgesia, an inherited disorder which causes patients to have a severely reduced capacity to detect damage to their body that would usually cause extreme pain, such as biting off fingertips, lips and the tongue, and frequent bone fractures. Patients with such pain insensitivity are being assessed in the hope of identifying novel analgesic drug targets.”

The fight or flight response initiated in response to stressors in our lives is not suited for the modern lifestyles of most people. The stress we experience is normally not able to be resolved by fighting or fleeing. This results in constant stress reactions in our bodies that can have very detrimental effects. Chronic stress can influence symptoms of chronic disease such as diabetes and asthma as well as causing separate negative reactions such as gastrointestinal symptoms, fatigue, insomnia, weight gain, and many other possible symptoms. The solution is to find coping strategies to deal with stress and realizing each person is different. Each one of us must find the coping skills suited to our individual needs. The article goes into detail and provides an excellent description of analyzing individual stressors and developing appropriate strategies.

Key Takeaways:

  • Stress has numerous triggers from including financial, work related, family related, and performance related worries. We often try to ignore stress and can overlook its effects on our health.
  • Stress occurs when we are required to adapt to changes in our surroundings. It releases hormones to help you protect yourself from danger. When we’re not in physical danger stress stays internalized.
  • Stress can aggravate conditions like asthma or cause them like headaches, and depression. Chronic stress can affect diet, appetite, and weight, poor sleep patterns, pain, and blood pressure.

“Feeling stressed can aggravate symptoms of asthma or diabetes, but it can also trigger other issues like headaches, depression or anxiety.”

Is your office job ruining your posture?

using a massage chair
using a massage chair

Health officials and professionals are increasingly warning of the negative overall health consequences that result from spending too much time in a seated position every day, as most individuals working in office settings are prone to do. One common consequence of sitting is poor posture, which can lead to negative side effects of its own, including symptoms of chronic pain. Data shows that the majority of chronic pain sufferers also hold jobs that require them to stay seated throughout the day.

Key Takeaways:

  • According to leading health officials, having a desk job could be destroying your posture and causing you significant back pain.
  • Even people with more physically active jobs who do not sit at a desk or computer experience work-related upper back and shoulder pain.
  • Even if you exercise regularly, prolonged sitting at your job can be detrimental to your health and well-being.

“Five out of ten patients suffer from joint pain caused by long hours of sitting in front of computer or other work related incorrect postures, says a top health official.”

Top 10 Accupressure Points For Pain Relief

purple flowers hanging

Individuals suffering from debilitating, disruptive, and stubborn chronic pain are increasingly finding a respite in the Chinese art of acupressure. The theoretical base of the treatment puts forth that all human bodies encompass meridians, through which channels of certain energies flow. Acupressure works to target these meridians and ensure their optimal functioning. When it comes to alleviating pain symptoms, certain acupressure locations are of more importance than others. These include the center of the forehead, the pericardium, and the tops of the ears, among others.

Key Takeaways:

  • For headaches, massage the hand between the thumb and index finger for a few minutes
  • Due to multitasking and stress one may feel pain the middle of the head, simply press your middle finger between your eyebrows for relief
  • Massage of the sacral points above the tailbone can relieve menstrual cramps and back pain

“Acupressure involves use of fingers, palms or elbows to apply pressure on the meridians, and massaging them in order to rejuvenate the energy.”

happy young family with kids in bright modern living room have fun and looking big flat lcd tv

Bowen Therapy is similiar to getting a massage done. People go in for their appointment and then the Dr asks them where they are having issues and then they use different rolling moves that are performed at different pressures, speeds, and directions. The appointment lasts for about 45 minutes to an hour. Between each set of moves the Dr is performing the Dr will leave the room. This is so the body can integrate the effects of each set of moves.

Key Takeaways:

  • Bowen Therapy is a holistic procedure that consists of performing rolling moves at different pressures and speeds on small areas of the body
  • These rolling movements trigger the brain to let go of tension, emotions, and stress
  • Each treatment will involve lying down for 45 minutes to one hour as the therapist works the body with frequent breaks

“As well as neck and back pain, migraines and their body’s alignment – the common complaints of a desk-bound office worker – Bowen can help treat issues in their joints, respiratory and digestive systems, as well as fertility issues.”

5 Common Chronic Problems Triggers And How To Avoid Them

soap and towel

It makes a lot of sense to avoid stress and anxiety if people can do so. The stress and anxiety can cause larger health issues for them in the future. People want to try to be able to sleep in the future. They are going to deal with larger health related issues if they do not get to sleep at the right times. People have to be able to find a way to make smart decisions as many times a day in order to avoid major healthcare issues.

Key Takeaways:

  • Stress and anxiety can trigger chronic pain, which is why it is so important to work to resolve one’s stress as much as possible.
  • Poor sleeping habits are linked to chronic pain, which is why it is critical to maintain a healthy sleep routine.
  • Inflammatory foods such as those containing caffeine, gluten, and MSG can all contribute to chronic pain.

“Chronic pain affects a massive number of people. In fact, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, it affects more Americans than diabetes, heart disease, and cancer combined, and is the most common cause of long-term disability.”

Yoga poses people can do at work for their necks, shoulders, and upper back

purple flowers hanging

Modern technology has created a very precarious situation for those people interested in preserving the health of their spine. When we are using our smartphones it is almost ‘natural’ to create a rounded shape with our spine that arcs our backs in a way that is unnatural. We are furthering the damage to our backs by sitting hunched over day in and day out. While at work especially, it is important to remain aware of what our bodies are doing, and straighten our backs to further the health of our backs.

Key Takeaways:

  • If yoga class isn’t someone’s thing but they still want to reap the benefits, there are poses they can do right in the hone or office to alleviate pain in their shoulders, neck, and back.
  • According to New York City yoga instructor Deborah Wolk, people can correct poor posture and a bent upper spine that comes from handheld device use by practicing simple yoga poses.
  • In addition to yoga, limit the time spent in any one position, including on the phone, reading a book, or typing.

“While the public appetite for essays reflecting on what all this phone time means to our relationships and social lives has been exhausted (because really, what can we do but adapt?), far fewer words have been dedicated to what it has done to our skeletal architecture, and specifically the health and strength of our necks and upper spines.”

Smartphone Apps Won’t Save People From Back Problems, Study Finds

stressed out businessman
stressed out businessman

Back pain is best dealt with using old-fashioned treatments. Smartphone apps that claim to treat ailments have been proven ineffective from a recent study from the University of Sydney showing it is still best to see professionals. The treatments suggested by mobile apps are unregulated and quality of information quite low. None have been tested to gauge effectiveness and lack customizable features that would be needed for individual treatment. App developers need to work closer with healthcare professionals in the future to produce more effective apps.

Key Takeaways:

  • Apps that claim to help treat back pain proved to be less effective than seeing a medical professional
  • Researchers reviewed 61 apps finding that many provided questionable content with no benefit to patients
  • Experts suggest that developers work closer with healthcare professionals to improve the apps

“Though the majority of the apps used guidelines suggested by Australia’s top health officials, the quality of the information shared by developers were low, in general.”

Do as I say, not as I do, if people want to avoid lower back problems

stretching before workout
stretching before workout

Many are aware of the “S” shape in the human spine. Because of evolution from walking on all fours to an upright position this curve was created as a result of the transformation. This curve in the spine which helps to support the upper body in an upright fashion however was not originally designed this way and creates undue pressure on the lower back and spine. This pressure may cause lower back pain in aging results that at times can be very painful.

Key Takeaways:

  • Back pain can have a variety of causes but the most common are muscular strain, disc prolapse, or a combination of both conditions.
  • The good news is that up to 90 percent of acute back pain resolves itself within six weeks, with or without treatment.
  • Should one’s back suddenly give out, try over-the-counter anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen and a heating pad to relieve the pain.

“Having evolved from ancestors that once walked on all fours, when we moved on to just two legs our large heads then had to balance precariously on rather ill-equipped apparatus.”

Back problems? It could be a sacroiliac joint

capsules
capsules

When people think of back pain, mostly they think of muscle or ligament strains, arthritis, herniated disks…but the culprit could be sacroiliac joint dysfunction. It usually causes pain on one side of the back and radiates down the leg. People’s SI joint serves as shock absorbers for the middle of their bodies, and patients normally complain of SI joint pain with standing or first standing up from lying down. People who exercise less are affected more often, as is having a swayback posture. In order to treat this, doctors recommend performing core exercises to take pressure off their backs. Surgery is generally only recommended in rare cases, such as after a fracture.

Key Takeaways:

  • While back pain is associated with ligaments and arthritis, an unexpected cause can be what is called sacroiliac joint dysfunction
  • Sacroiliac joint dysfunction will result in lower back pain that radiates through the thigh, groin, and foot
  • Sacroiliac joint surgery is turned to only in rare cases, and physical activity is the usual recommendation for relief

“If it turns out that a sacroiliac joint is responsible, Flechtenmacher recommends exercise: “The most important thing is to strengthen one’s abdominal muscles in order to take pressure off their backs.””

Very few people ever spend much time thinking about their postures, despite the importance it plays in the overall well being of the body and mind. Postures will often vary from one individual to the next, but there are some ways of standing that are proven to be harmful in the long term. It is important to take notice of one’s own form and determine whether adjustments must be made in the interest of one’s own health. There are day-to-day habits that impact our postures, and some may require changes accordingly.

Key Takeaways:

  • Posture varies from person to person, however, there are definitely some stances that can lead to poor patterns of movement and pain.
  • If one does have a posture problem, it’s important to figure out what may be causing it, in order to address it correctly.
  • Posture problems can be caused by muscle imbalances, overtraining in the gym, or wearing high heels, to name just a few.

“Our bodies on which we depend for a lifetime of service are seldom taken for check-ups until they’ve almost broken down.”

Last month, Masaka Hospital began hosting Chinese doctors who specialize in acupuncture, a traditional Chinese medical treatment. Practiced for many years, the procedure involves stimulating specific points on the body by inserting needles through the skin. Research has shown that this can reduce nausea, vomiting, correct neck problems, fatigue, and chronic headaches. It can be used in place of surgery and carries fewer risks. Acupuncture is even claimed to improve pregnancy chances as it increases blood flow to the uterus and used as an alternative to in-vitro fertilization.

Key Takeaways:

  • Research shows acupuncture reduces nausea and vomiting after surgery and may aid the activity of the body’s pain killing chemicals
  • The therapy can keep a person looking young, with wrinkles on the face improving with time
  • Cupping is also used as part of acupuncture treatment, which helps stimulates the body’s natural energy

“Physicians also say acupuncture is useful in correcting problems of the neck, shoulders, nerve problems, fatigue, back pain, osteoarthritis, and chronic headache, among others.”

There is a definitive link between high levels of stress and new or exacerbated symptoms of back pain. If the pain in someone’s back is severe enough to disrupt their ability to fall or stay asleep, then common knowledge dictates that it is likely linked to stress. Unfortunately, inadequate sleep is a cause of stress in and of itself. In order to combat this destructive cycle, patients should seek out natural supplements to improve their sleep. During waking hours, patients should practice mindful breathing.

Key Takeaways:

  • If the pain in someone’s back is so severe as to disrupt their sleep cycle, then the pain is likely linked to stress.
  • patients should seek out natural supplements and find dosages and combinations that work for them to improve their sleep.
  • During their waking hours, patients should practice mindful breathing in order to minimize the harmful presence of stress

“Stress plays a huge role in not only causing back pain, but even managing back pain.”

Chronic back pain: A 10-minute treatment leaves patients pain-free

Exercising beside the ocean
Exercising beside the ocean

There is a new and less invasive treatment for chronic low back pain caused from a herniated disc. A CT machine guides a needle and probe into the effected area where a pinched nerve has not responded to traditional medical treatment. The probe gives electronic pulsations and promotes healing. The once pinched nerves have more room. Some patients respond very rapidly while others need a second treatment. The results lasted for up to a year and more invasive surgery is avoided.

Key Takeaways:

  • A new study shows that a ten minute radio-frequency treatment can reduce and eliminate the pain caused by a herniated disk in the spine.
  • For most people suffering from this kind of back pain, the discomfort is gone in about six weeks, but 10% of sufferers need enhanced treatment.
  • The CT-guided pulsed radio-frequency treatment is less invasive as surgery.

“For 90 percent of people with back pain because of a herniated disk, symptoms will pass within 6 weeks. But for the remaining 10 percent, it is unlikely that current medical treatments alone will alleviate pain”

Chronic pain is actually excessively common in Americans. The problem with chronic pain is that it is very difficult to diagnose and even more difficult to treat. Sometimes the only real treatment could be simply avoiding the triggers that seem to worsen the pain. For one thing, avoid anxiety and stress, since they can send people spinning in a cycle of sleepless and painful nights – which are clearly undesirable. Make sure they treat themselves to a proper amount of sleep every night. Temperature swings can be a trigger as well, but unfortunately there is not much we can do about that. Overexertion, whether in exercise or at work, can also increase people’s likelihood of triggering their pain. Lastly, there may be some inflammatory foods that trigger people’s pain attacks. These would be different for everyone, so there is no definitive list of foods to stay away from.

Key Takeaways:

  • FIVE COMMON CAUSES OF CHRONIC BACK PAIN TRIGGERS AND WAYS TO AVOID THE TRIGGERS. ANXIETY AND STRESS, BAD SLEEPING HABITS, TEMP SWINGS, OVEREXHAUSTION, INFLAMMITORY FOODS

Chiropratic Expert Dr. Mary Negri, DC: Backpack Safety

meditating

All children at some point carry a backpack to school or events. Most carry them every day. Since kids’ skeletal system is growing rapidly, it’s important to make sure that backpacks are carried correctly. Make sure it’s the right size and weight for one’s child. Buy one with padded straps and ensure it’s snugly fit to the body for good posture. When packing it, make sure the heavier items are going to be carried closer to the child’s back to keep the center of gravity balanced and avoiding strain.

Key Takeaways:

  • Childhood back pain has 2 mechanisms at work: posture and the increasing weight being carried inside of a backpack.
  • Choose a backpack that offers the best ergonomic benefits to your child and teach them to pack the heaviest items closes to their bodies.
  • Children shouldn’t carry more than 15% of their weight on the backs. If the load is heavier, communicate any concerns to the teacher to see what can be done.

“As a chiropractor one of the most common problems 1 see in my office are back pain, neck and shoulder pain, and headaches. Over the years it is not surprising that patients with these types of problems seem to be getting younger and younger. One of the most obvious reasons for early onset of neck and back pain is the increasing weight and size of children’s backpacks.”

Radiofrequency therapy relieved herniated disk pain in new study

river in the forest
river in the forest

A new therapy tested at the Sapienza University of Rome was able to relieve lower back pain in subjects who had herniated disc pain. The procedure is minimally invasive and involves a micro needle injected near the bulging disc. The needle houses a component that sends radiofrequency pulses to the nerves and muscles around the disc. The pulses change the nerve conductivity, leading to lessening of pain. After treatment, more than 80 percent of subjects were pain free and most remained so in followup.

Key Takeaways:

  • A new radiofrequency therapy may relieve back pain from herniated discs, which is one of the most common causes of debilitating back pain.
  • The CT-guided procedure is minimally invasive, inserting a probe that delivers an electrical current to relax the muscles and correct the vertebral distance.
  • More research is needed to prove the radiofrequency therapy’s validity, and it still should be coupled with physical therapy for treatment.

“A group of researchers from Sapienza University in Italy believe they have found a solution to at least one form of debilitating back discomfort after their tests left the majority patients free of pain.”

A new treatment for the lower back pain associated with herniated discs has been successful in trials in Italy. Researchers at Sapienza University, Rome, used a pulsed radiofrequency probe to stimulate the muscles around the disc in a small study group. After only ten minutes of treatment, more than 80 percent of subjects were pain free and remained so after follow up. The probe is encased in a micro needle providing minimally invasive treatment for this common pain disorder.

Key Takeaways:

  • Inflammation and pain go away sand the distance between vertebrae returns to normal
  • The pulsations do not touch the disc and heal the herniation.
  • One single treatment of no longer than 10 minutes helped 80% of the patients treated.

“Researchers found that the majority of patients were pain free after receiving the new image-guided pulsed radiofrequency treatment for low back pain and sciatica for just 10 minutes.”

Back pain severity and causes range wildly

Doing stretching
Doing stretching

Back pain is a simple phrase but it encompasses a range of intensity and causes. It can come from damage to the upper or lower back, which is how it’s categorized by doctors. It can also be the product of other factors such as genetics and primary diseases like cancer. Acute back pain is short lived, in the order of three months. Anything longer is considered chronic and although both should be addressed, chronic pain should be taken seriously and in consultation with a doctor.

Key Takeaways:

  • Back pain afflicts more than twenty five percent of all Americans, either occasionally or chronically.
  • Back pain often occurs when muscles or soft tissues in and around the spine are strained or damaged.
  • Age typically plays a role in back pain; as we age it becomes more likely to experience back pain.

“Work that requires lifting, pushing, pulling or twisting the spine can lead to back pain. Likewise, those who are just sitting at a desk all day may experience back pain due to poor posture.”

Golf is a very popular sport in Florida, especially during the Winter months. In the winder you will want to protect your golf cart from any weather. More than one third of the people that partake in this sport are over 50 years old and that means back pain is a common issue that they all have to deal with. It is true that normal aging and the usual wear and tear can cause back pain in people, but golf is one thing that can have a big impact on back pain as well.

Key Takeaways:

  • While golf can be a good low impact source of exercise, it can still but strain on the back.
  • The twisting and body positions can often cause spine damage if the player’s posture isn’t good during the swing of the club.
  • Even with the potential for long term problems, staying active is better than giving up exercise.

Is a mobile phone damaging the back?

flowing water
flowing water

It can be the little things that add up to back pain. Long periods of inactivity, such as when one sleeps, can cause the spine to settle. The discs can even bloat up some, so it’s critical to move with care when one first gets up. When sitting or driving, use proper posture to avoid straining muscles and joints. And when lifting heavy weights, don’t use the back to move the mass. And the newest problem; don’t scrunch the neck down while staring at a phone.

Key Takeaways:

  • When one sleeps, the spine settles and bloats a little; moving quickly after first getting up can cause injury.
  • Bad posture even while standing passively to do simple tasks can put stress on the back.
  • Sitting slumped in a chair or hunched behind the wheel of a car as a habit often leads to back problems.

“Bending one’s head over a tablet or phone strains the neck muscles,” says Sammy. Studies show that for every inch the head is angled forward, 4.5 kgs is added to its weight (and the average head weighs 5 kgs). So, if one bends the head three inches that puts about 19 kgs of load on the neck — increasing the risk of injury”

For people who have to drive long distances and have chronic back pain, there are several things they can do to reduce the discomfort behind the wheel. These people could invest in a ventilated foam seat cushion, lumbar support and a heated seat cover. The latter helps relieve muscle spasms. Driving an automatic transmission and using cruise control can reduce pressure on their lumbar and distribute their weight more evenly. It’s also good to sit upright and keep the seat closer to the pedals.

Key Takeaways:

  • While people might be working to avoid long periods of sitting, that’s hard when they’ve got a long drive ahead.
  • Invest in seat cushions that not only supports their body, but allow it to breathe, while they’re on the road.
  • Technology can help; utilize cruise control and automatic transmissions to allow them greater flexibility behind the wheel.

Dry needling: How the modern treatment aims at easing muscle pain

Woman at the gym
Woman at the gym

There’s a new treatment for muscle pain that involves a system called dry needling. It works by inserting needles into what is known as a trigger point which is a painful knot type sensation in the muscle and fascia. Although it seems similar to acupuncture, it does not target meridians but instead releases tension directly in the pained area. The treatment can be painful like massaging a knot would be, but the results seem to indicate it’s fast acting. Research suggests it’s good for headaches, and multiple areas of pain on neck and back.

Key Takeaways:

  • Acupuncture and dry needling seem similar, but the later is a modern treatment rather than an ancient technique.
  • Dry needling focuses on inserting and manipulating needles directly into knots of muscle tension, rather than acupuncture points.
  • With dry needling, physiotherapists manipulate these areas of muscle tension to relieve stress and pressure.

“By the next morning, it was a nagging ache, and eventually, the headaches were gone – from just one session.”

Sitting for long? Beware! It can kill

Seashells
Seashells

Most of us know smoking, poor diet, and heavy drinking can cause serious health effects. Not as many people are aware that long periods of sitting, especially as a habit, can be just as damaging to the human body. Humanity was not designed by nature to be sitters, yet in the modern era we spend an ever increasing amount of time planted in chairs. Some exercise can help blunt the health effects, especially some small but regular stretch or brief walk breaks.

Key Takeaways:

  • The human body is designed for activity, not sitting; long stretches seated can cause serious physical problems.
  • The inactivity of sitting drops one’s metabolism, and the lower energy level can lead to heart and cardiovascular issues.
  • Poor posture while seated can often lead to pain in the neck and back as your spine is slowly damaged over time.

“Though people may do some physical activity in the morning, but they too are not out of danger if they sit for long time.”

How to prevent neck pain when road riding

doing exercise
doing exercise

Cycling is both fun and also stellar exercise. But people can actually overextend the neck and create stiffness in the tendons when riding for long periods. People will want to raise the handlebars to prevent this. Make sure the angle of elbow to hand is correct, with a slight bend to ease pressure on neck muscles. It’s common on some bikes to ride with the head tilted backwards which fatigues the trapezius muscle forcing it to be sole support for the head. Take the time to adjust the handlebar properly for a pain free ride.

Key Takeaways:

  • The neck is the spine, and the muscles surrounding it, that support and direct the head.
  • When riding a bike, the neck is often extended and tilted in abnormal ways that can cause physical stress.
  • To avoid neck pain while riding, make sure people change hand and body positions regularly to ease the stress.

“Over time, cyclists can develop stiffness and pain in the upper trapezius and neck muscles.”

Massages help by targeting area of pain to help lower it. Music helps the brain and also copes with certain moods a person might be feeling. Magnets help improve blood flow and helps treat ailments.

Key Takeaways:

  • Being mindful is about staying aware of what people are experiencing, rather than pulling back from it, so they can manage it.
  • Magnet therapy is an ancient technique, and is both cheap and almost effortless; simply wear something magnetic.
  • Music can soothe and stimulate, and is an excellent method of managing sensations that could otherwise be overwhelming.

“My massage therapist told me that even a single massage session has been shown to significantly lower heart rate, cortisol and insulin levels — which reduce stress.”

Stress and obesity go hand in hand

relaxing in the living room
relaxing in the living room

It turns out that stress and obesity both go hand in hand. Work related stress is leading to obesity problems all across the country. People are trying to cope with tough deadlines and in order to deal with this, they are turning to food in order to make them feel more calm. Short term stress does not cause this issue, long term stress does. If one experiences short term stress, then one will not have an appetite.

Key Takeaways:

  • Medical professionals say stress, from any source, is a common cause for weight gain.
  • Hormones, which are affected by high stress, can be further manipulated by certain foods; which can lead to relying on them to feel better.
  • Doctors continue to teach the best way to deal with both stress and weight gain is exercise and a healthy diet.

“In order to cope with tough deadlines and competitive environments, more and more people are resorting to foods like ice creams and chocolates”

Holiday exercise can help reduce stress

pond with aquatic plants
pond with aquatic plants

Holiday exercise can help to reduce stress in someone’s life. November and December are the times of year when people throw their exercise routines to the wind. They start to buy presents for people and put together parties and make tons of good food and this can make exercise seem like a thing of the past. But, exercise can do a lot for people and help them get rid of some of that holiday stress.

Key Takeaways:

  • Taking time out during a busy holiday schedule to exercise can keep one relaxed and recharged.
  • Treating oneself can be indulgent and fun, but set limits so one can keep from letting guilt overwhelm someone.
  • Stick to one’s health and weight loss goals so one doesn’t reach the New Year struggling to recover lost progress.

“Balance is key when it comes to the holidays. Too much of anything, whether presents or food, can become problematic.”

Holiday hangover: How to bounce back from the food, booze and emotional stress

sunset at the beach
sunset at the beach

A lot of people are experiencing what is known as a holiday hangover. Thankfully, there is a way to bounce back from all of the food and booze and emotional stress that the holidays bring with them. The holidays are filled with foods that are very high in sodium. If someone has too much sodium in a meal, it can make the heart work harder. The next day, people should cut their sodium intake in half and drink plenty of water.

Key Takeaways:

  • High levels of salt intake can cause health problems, both temporary and long term, so keep an eye on what’s in the food.
  • Sugary treats are sweet, but they load people up with empty calories and can cause the dreaded sugar crash afterwards.
  • Christmas cocktails can be a tradition, but over indulging can cause a headache when the alcohol dehydrates people.

“Whether someone is a sucker for the dessert table or spends the holidays dodging underhanded insults from their mother-in-law, stash these tricks in the holiday survival toolkit.”

Visiting the doctor for low back pain? Expect something different now

stretching arms

Low back pain is something that has been commonly treated at the doctors for quite some time. Now, if people visit the doctor, they might be surprised to see what has changed. Instead of prescribing the usual pain medications, doctors are now turning to alternative strategies such as yoga, mindfulness and various other types of treatment for their lower back pain. This is due to research indicating that the pain medications are not working as effectively as intended and due to our recent opioid crisis. Alternatives to opiods are often the best choice for people suffering long term. A change in the culture regarding this is truly needed.

Key Takeaways:

  • Treatment regimens for lower back pain have changed quite a bit in the last few years.
  • Doctors now suggest yoga, mindfulness, and therapy instead of opioid pain medications or invasive procedures.
  • Though these treatments may prove helpful and affective for many, the cost of these therapies may negatively affect some patients.

“If people visit their family doctor with low back pain (LBP), they may be surprised at the treatment options they suggest now.”

Walking daily can help prevent back pain

purple flowers hanging

Research has shown that back pain is a greater economic health burden than cancer, heart disease and diabetes combined. On top of that, back pain is the most common source of pain that effects eight out of ten of us during our lifetimes. Back pain can be split into two groups: non-specific back pain and mechanical back pain. Mechanical back pain is caused by the movements of the spine, whereas non-specific back pain has no known root cause.

Key Takeaways:

  • People can have back pain that is non specific. That means that people just hurt but cannot attribute the pain to any one thing.
  • Pain triggered by movements of the spine is considered mechanical back pain.
  • Walk at least twenty minutes a day and this will do wonders for the back! Try to walk hard enough to elevate one’s heart rate and breathing

“One that the best (and cheapest ways) to prevent back pain that he tells his patients is to simply walk at least 20 minutes a day.”

Luckily, there is an innovative and easy to use solution to their low back pain issues. Foam rollers can help relieve pain, improve recovery time, and decrease exercise related injuries. Adding 15 minutes of foam rolling into a daily routine can take low back pain out of the equation.

Key Takeaways:

Why Stress Leads Us to Make Bad Decisions and Do Stupid Things

rustic candles
rustic candles

Researches at MIT have theorized that if people are stressed out they are more likely to make stupid choices. It is being suggested that if they have had a stressful day that they are more likely to make a bad choice versus a day when they weren’t under as much stress. The researches found this out after testing mice in a maze. The stressed subjects made bad decisions to get good rewards and the less stressed made good choices. This is how they think addictive personalities may work. The researches also found out they could make the mice more impulsive by triggering a circuit in the brain. Now they are wondering if they can make them less impulsive and do the same for humans.

Key Takeaways:

  • Stress is often distracting, but new research confirms that the ability to make rational decisions is affected by it.
  • A scientific study used mice to explore their decision making while stressed or not, and found that under stress they made riskier choices.
  • The research also found certain neural pathways in the prefrontal cortex linked to impulse control were affected by stress.

“People who suffer from addiction, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder sometimes experience impulsiveness and difficulty making rational decisions.”

Back pain is no joke, but I’ve got one about MRI scanners!

stretching arms
stretching arms

Getting injured or being in pain to begin with can be very uncomfortable. When seeking medical attention, hospitals can seem scary. Especially with all of the new technology and even the MRI’s. Sitting in a MRI can be disturbing and nerve racking. It’s oddly very quiet but not at the same time. It is a very painless procedure which can take a few minutes. Keeping a calm state of mind is key. Also, no metal objects are allowed in the MRI room, especially if they’re on or inside of someone.

Key Takeaways:

  • If back pain continues to persist, it might be time for advanced diagnostic techniques such as the MRI scanner.
  • While the MRI scan itself is painless, patients must be very careful about their medical history; including if they’ve ever had metal implanted in their bodies.
  • Even though the MRI machine is loud and can be extremely distracting, it’s better than suffering through constant pain of an undiagnosed injury.

Stress is present in anyone, but women take it to heart more than men. Researchers have studied the relationship between obesity and life events in middle-aged or older women. These women were also researched depending on the type of stress from traumatic events or negative life events that have happened in the past. It showed that the women who had a least one traumatic event had at least a 11 percent increase in obesity compared to women with no traumatic events.

Key Takeaways:

  • As women age it is natural to gain weight along the way. The hard part is maintaining the weight so one does not become over weight
  • The stress of family and work can cause weight gain. We have to monitor what goes in our mouths.
  • Being unemployed and being rejected for numerous jobs can cause a ice cream binge. It imperative to eat heaalthy snacks

“Women who experience more stress from major life events are at a higher risk of developing obesity than those who do not face any stressful events, a study has found.”

The most common source of stress in relationships isn’t what people think

happy young family in white clothing have fun and play with beautiful dog at vacations on beautiful beach

Keeping the relationship with one’s romantic significant other going can be difficult sometimes. Couples that stay together are often the ones who are willing to acknowledge there will be ups and downs, and that sometimes there will be things that have to be faced. Money is an obvious pitfall that pops up. Children are another. And both tend to be something that can get in the way of sex, one way or another. Therapists recommend communication as the key to staying connected and content.

Key Takeaways:

  • Having children can cause strain on a relationship. It can become very stressful.
  • The majority of relationships become stressful because people stress wanting the relationship to work.
  • We must all learn to soothe things out. Accept one’s partner for who they are.

“The key lies in knowing which pitfalls commonly derail couples so that people and their significant others can prepare themselves to sail through them rather than abandon ship at the first sign of trouble.”

The holidays can bring stress, and food can pile atop the crush of events and family and social occasions to keep people’s tensions high. Avoiding excessive fat and sugar can help quite a bit, particularly since heavy foods can stay with people, and sugar inevitably leads to an energy crash once the rush of sweets wears off. Plan for some healthy options in and around the big event meals, such as cereals, whole fruits, or even some simple mashed potatoes to stay ready for a busy schedule.

Key Takeaways:

  • A quick and easy, but substantial, snack when the holidays are keeping people busy is jam toast with egg.
  • Breakfast cereal is simple and a snap to dig into, at any time of day or night, while remaining filling.
  • Fruits and peanut butter can combine to provide fresh tastes and protein with next to no preparation required.

“While I’m slicing my fruit into equal-sized pieces, it’s nice to pretend for a hot second that cutting away responsibility from my life would be just as easy.”

8 silent signs stress is making people sick

doing exercise

Stress can manifest symptoms in many different ways. Some are less obvious than others, but they can all add up and make something tough that much harder to deal with. One in three Americans say stress is placing a burden on their daily health, both mentally as well as physically. Some stressed individuals will break out in hives, or experience ups and downs with their weight. Headaches are common, or difficulty concentrating. Stress is even something that can impact people’s immune system, making them susceptible to minor illnesses more frequently.

Key Takeaways:

  • Stress can cause an outbreak of hives, or lead to weight fluxuations, both of which can create further stress.
  • Headaches and a tendency to come down with minor illnesses are a common side effect of being stressed.
  • Stress can lead to hair falling out, or even acne; but neither is permanent if stress levels can be reduced.

“Stress triggers the release of the hormone cortisol, which impairs one’s body’s ability to process blood sugar and changes the way one metabolizes fat, protein, and carbs, which can lead to weight gain or loss.”

How to Nurse a Baby Without Back and Neck Pain

close up of colorful flowers
close up of colorful flowers

Breastfeeding demands certain techniques and practice, and can be difficult to learn during the initial stages of getting to know one’s baby. Some new mothers experience muscular pain in the back and neck due to bad posture as they adjust to holding and positioning both themselves and their infant during breastfeeding. To minimize discomfort, sit with back support to ease lower back, and make sure the shoulders are back to avoid stress on the arms and upper back. Don’t hunch, and make sure one is not dropping the head awkwardly during breastfeeding to avoid neck pain.

Key Takeaways:

  • Make sure one is sitting in a good, supportive position that protects one’s back while breastfeeding.
  • Keep one’s shoulders squared and back to avoid pain developing in one’s neck and upper back.
  • Avoid slouching or contorting when bringing the baby into nursing position, as this can lead to pain over time due to bad posture.

“mothers still endure neck and back pain that arises from nursing in hunched and awkward positions”

Portrait of posh guy in formalwear sitting and stretching himself

Case study reveals that being pregnant can be a real pain in the back. Hyperlordosis is the technical term for those suffering with lower back pain while pregnant. There are several pain management options available to helping cope with this condition. Doctors recommend such treatments as, osteopathic manipulation, physical therapy and even acupuncture. Maintaining an active lifestyle also brings a chance of relief for those suffering from hyperlordosis. This lumbar back pain can cause distress to many pregnant women. It is very important that they seek medical advice when dealing with hyperlordosis.

Key Takeaways:

  • Pregnancy can induce many changes upon the female body, some of them discomforting or even painful.
  • Pain in the back or spine often causes patients to shift or move around awkwardly, which usually worsens the pain.
  • Focusing on maintaining good posture, even during mild back discomfort, can reduce the instances of severe spinal pain that occur.

“It has been postulated that there are two patterns of common back pain during pregnancy: lumbar pain (LP) and posterior pelvic pain.”

Exercise keeps people fit and healthy and feeling their best, but there’s even more reason to work-out if they have back pain. Anyone who’s ever experienced back pain can attest to the extreme pain that it brings, sometimes affecting a person’s quality of life. But, when people exercise, the back pain that they feel could be gone forever, or at a minimum less severe so that it does not impact their lives in such a negative manner.

Key Takeaways:

  • when patients are given information about back pain, and they exercise, their chances of developing low back pain are reduced significantly.
  • exercises such as strengthening, stretching, and aerobics can lower the risk of developing low back pain.
  • exercise is a more effective deterrent to avoid back pain than other tactics such as specially designed mattresses or shoes.

“Compared to people who didn’t exercise, those who did were 33 percent less likely to develop low back pain, the analysis of data from 16 previously published studies found.”

America Is Losing the War on Chronic Pain

river in the forest
river in the forest

It may not come as a surprise that chronic pain is one of the most common health concerns in America. With about 1 in 3 of Americans living with some form of pain whether chronic or severe, it’s certainly not hard to understand opioid dependencies and overdoses rising to an all time high. Even with pain being a common complaint amongst most patients most find it difficult to find relief. Some patients falling victim to the stigma portrayed by the media and skepticism from healthcare providers. This can leave patients feeling lost, upset, and even angry at the fact that they are misunderstood. It is often hard to comprehend the complexity and challenges of what someone with chronic pain go through every day. According to Cindy Steinberg, the national director of policy and advocacy at the U.S. Pain Foundation and chair of the Policy Council of the Massachusetts Pain Initiative, the media and politics have added to the hardship these patients face because they cannot find help. This has just compounded the issues caused by the widespread use OxyContin for pain. President Trump has also declared the opioid epidemic a public health emergency, and while no one disputes the dangers of the drug, these patients still need relief. Patients that do find a provider who will listen often find new hurdles from their insurance companies. Truthfully, patients will not find relief until the medical community truly becomes educated on the topic and these patients are heard and given alternatives that work.

Key Takeaways:

  • high rate of over 100 million Americans with Chronic pain without proper treatment lead to increase overdoses and addictions to drugs like Opioids.
  • Opioid abuse now believed to be the greatest threat in drug epidemics in the history of the US, leading to deaths of about 33,000 in 2015.
  • Pain prescriptions not providing enough relief to the patients but still are #1 way, long term resolution requires individualized care that doctors cant provide or lack the knowledge or time to do so.

“Because of some healthcare workers’ attitudes toward opioids and media coverage of the opioid epidemic, when patients bring up the fact that they live with pain, they’re looked at with skepticism, questioned relentlessly, second-guessed, and judged.”

Portrait of two aged females doing yoga exercise for balance in sport gym

A new study on using pregabalin for chronic and acute sciatica has had some disappointing results. Previously indicated as a good treatment for neuropathic pain, the study found no decrease in symptoms and multiple side effects in using it for sciatica. The study was done on more than 200 patients, most of whom completed the study. In comparison to the placebo group, the pregabalin group saw no improvement in symptoms, leaving the drug out of the running for sciatica treatment.

Key Takeaways:

  • Description of pregabalin’s use to combat various degrees of sciatica
  • pergabalin is shown to be a safe treatment when a test was conducted by an Australian trial
  • The article describes how the study was conducted and on what types of people

“Although previous research has found pregabalin to be effective against some types of neuropathic pain, this study suggests that pregabalin is not appropriate for the treatment of sciatica”

Back pain effects one in ten people and is a leading cause of missed work. Many try alternative treatments such as medication, chiropractic, physical therapy and the like. But now doctors are looking to provide spinal fusion surgery as an option when other treatments fail to relieve the pain. This can result in limited movement in some patients with a long lead time for healing. Artificial discs are now being created to replace the damaged discs similar to replacement knee or hip joints.

Key Takeaways:

  • As people get older the discs in their backs can bulge and the spinal nerves compress
  • While past traditional fusion surgery resulted in limited successful movement, a new method developed at spine Surgery in Georgetown University Hospital in Washington DC appears to be more successful
  • The new method is to enter from the front then inserting a device that has a coating that bonds to the bone creating a new disc and allowing free movement

“In the past, fusion surgery was the only option, but that led to limited movement. Now surgeons and patients have a potentially huge new option for a pain-free life.”

Pain in the back is one of the most frequent factors for why employees miss work across the world, and one of the most common causes of disability. Slouching and bending badly, prolonged sitting in an awkward position, can affect the spine quite a lot. These habits can increase how rapidly joints degrade and cause stress to rapidly accumulate. The issue can even lead to heart problems. A study in London over twenty years showed men who reported chronic bad posture or height loss had a nearly two-thirds greater chance of coronary disease.

Key Takeaways:

  • One common cause for back pain may actually be poor posture. But one London study suggests that poor posture could have other effects.
  • Posture deviation may take place among men who commonly have poor posture. They might also experience height loss over the course of their lives.
  • These men were also at a higher risk of developing coronary heart disease too. The London study followed thousands of men over the course of 20 years.

“A London study followed 4,000 men for 20 years and found the men who experienced posture deviation and height loss had a 64 percent higher risk of developing coronary heart disease.”

gorgeous hanging primula flowers in a pot on a brick wall background

Sleep is necessary, but just laying down and closing one’s eyes isn’t enough to ensure one gets good sleep every night. How one’s sleep, the body position one sleeps in, plays an important role. For those worried about lower back pain, there are some sleep positions that can alleviate the problem, according to Healthline. Curling up in a fetal position before drifting off, or arranging a pillow between the knees and laying on the side are their recommendations.

Key Takeaways:

  • A proper night of sleep is crucial because it encourages the formation and retention of memories, as well as muscle development.
  • For those experiencing back pain, sleeping on one’s side helps because it creates more space between the vertebrae, which causes the spine to curve.
  • Studies have shown that many couples fight in bed due to poor sleep. Obtaining more rest by sleeping on the side may help to mitigate those instances.

“sleeping on one’s side with a pillow between the knees, or sleeping on the side in the fetal position, is pretty good for people.”

Managing pain helps aging clients get/stay in shape

woman sleeping in a spa
woman sleeping in a spa

Everyone has to face aging. The body will begin to feel the pains and aches of sore joints eventually. Past medical procedures can begin to add up, as well as old injuries. For this reason, a former Wall Street worker has embraced increased physical activity in his 70s. He found age was taking a toll on his body, and embraced statistics that showed those 70 or older were often likely to live into their 80s. Since he wanted to make the best of those years, he added some exercise and activity to his routine.

Key Takeaways:

  • Aging doesn’t mean one can’t get or stay active and enjoy the health benefits of exercise.
  • Working to maintain good physical health through activity can help one stay independent.
  • Some doctors recommend pain management medication, even marijuana, since it is important for patients to not stop exercising due to pain.

We need to be taking the physical symptoms of stress more seriously – Metro

photo of nature
photo of nature

Being an adult is stressful and a lot of us adults don’t take stress seriously or the effect it has on our body. Stress can show up on the body through skin diseases and rashes. It also shows up in one’s digestive system causing constipation and diarrhea. People should never tell a person who is stressed to just relax because that never works. They should also never tell a person who is stressed that they have nothing to be stressed about.

Key Takeaways:

Spontaneous Electrical Activity (SEA) and dissipation of a pain mediating chemical found within the body are two of the most noticeable benefits of this new (but really old) pain relief tactic. Used to treat acute muscle pain, practitioners use bamboo to stimulate knotted muscles and given worried patients immediate relief from tennis elbow, tendonitis, fibromyalgia, and a host of other muscle-related ailments. Despite the ominous sounding name, and its perceived similarity to acupuncture, practitioners in the office are answering more and more questions to this remarkable option.

Key Takeaways:

  • Trigger point dry needling originated in Asia, but is a separate treatment from acupuncture

“Utilizing stainless steel needles, the practitioner of TDN or trigger point dry needling, needles the musculature of the body in order to elicit several physiologic responses.”
