[SCREEN TEXT: Sciatica & Massage Chairs]

Novo XTAlan: Hi, I’m Dr. Alan Weidner from ‘Massage-Chair-Relief.com‘ and today I want to talk a little bit about sciatica, and how massage chairs can possibly help you. Sciatica, you’ve probably heard the word before, it refers to pain along the sciatic nerve, which is a nerve that comes from the lower portion of your low back, down through the hips, and down the leg.

Alan: And when people have sciatic pain, they’ve got pain that comes through the back, it can hurt them in back, it can hurt them in the butt, and it can hurt them down here in the leg, usually along the side of the leg, down to the knee, sometimes down to the toes. Well, how on earth could a massage chair help sciatica? Well, two things to consider, number one is massage chairs have recently developed these things called L-tracks, which is a roller that comes down the back, and under the butt. Now, what does this have to do with sciatica?

Alan: Well, there’s different causes of sciatica. It could be a disc herniation. It could be bone spurs that are going on in the bones that the nerve comes out that are choking off the sciatic nerve, or it could be a piriformis muscle, and you may have heard of piriformis syndrome. But there are muscles in your butt that go – and I’ve got my microphone pack there – but there’s muscles that go from diagonally across your butt, from your tailbone up over to the hip. And you’ve got your gluteus maximus muscle, you’ve got your gluteus medius muscle, you’ve got the piriformis muscle, and the piriformis muscle, it’s a deeper muscle, but when it’s contracted, and if the sciatic nerve is near it, it can, it’s almost like an impingement syndrome on the sciatic nerve, and it can give you all this type of pain that we just talked about. If that is the cause of your sciatic pain, a muscle, the piriformis muscle usually, the chair can help you with that.

Alan: If it is a herniated disc, the chair better, probably won’t do much for you, if it, unless it, of course, a chair can help with herniated discs to some degree. Not full-blown herniated discs, but if you’ve got a grade-one herniated disc, sometimes segmental motion in the area by the rollers on the back will help, it’ll help induce normal motion in to that joint, and that may help your disc, and that may in turn help your sciatica, but that’s not usually where this chair will help you. If you have bone spurs that are encroaching on your vertebral, intervertebral foramina, it’s not going to probably help you much, but if it is a piriformis syndrome, or if you have some musculature in the butt, that when it’s worked on, your sciatica gets better, the chair will help you. Now, this is where the L-track comes in to play. I’ve got this on, this is the Human Touch Novo XT. You’ll see there’s rollers down here in the seat. In an S-track chair, the rollers end here. On the L- and J-track chairs, the rollers continue underneath, and guess what those rollers are doing down there? They’re digging in to those butt muscles and they’re digging in to that piriformis muscle, and that can help you if you have sciatica.

Alan: So, if you have sciatica, and it’s caused by muscular problems, you want to get an L-track chair, almost always an L-track chair will do some good. An S-track chair will not have rollers that’ll get under there and work. Some of the S-track chairs have airbags in the seat that might compress a little bit and help you a little bit, but we’ve seen a far greater response from L-track chairs, and J-track chairs.
