While baldness is typically associated with middle age, experts are seeing an increase in young adults experiencing premature hair loss. Dermatologists often attribute this trend to high stress levels among millennials, which can contribute to conditions like telogen effluvium, in which stress causes hair follicles to stop working; alopecia areata, in which the immune system actually attacks hair; and a psychiatric disorder called trichotillomania, the compulsion to pull out one’s own hair, especially in times of increased stress.
