Spinal manipulation has been regarded as an unsuccessful treatment for lower back pain. It was even considered as unsuccessful as a “sham intervention” or placebo. However, after more studies were conducted, it was found that spinal manipulation relieved back pain by 10 points on a 100 point scale.

There are some risks associated with spinal manipulation so some physical therapists and chiropractors are hesitant to use the method. It is also quite expensive considering insurance typically will not cover it. However, spinal manipulation may suit someone experiencing back pain who would like a non-invasion therapy.
