  1. What Features Should You Look For In A Massage Chair?

Not so long ago a “massage chair” was just a regular living room chair with a vibrating motor built into it. It didn’t do much to “massage” the body or to relieve pain, but was great if you wanted to shake up your lunch.

Kneading - Called “Shiatsu” by some, kneading rolls from the center of the spine outward and feels like two hands alternately rubbing your back. A kneading massage is a great way to relieve stress and give your overworked back muscles a break.

Percussion/Tapping - Have you ever seen a massage therapist “karate chopping” someone’s back? A percussive massage really gets the blood flowing and feels amazing. It’s particularly good if you’ve been doing a lot of intense exercise.

Rolling - In my chiropractic office I have a $2,800.00 table called a “Roller table.” It’s basically just wheels that roll up and down either side of your spine, gently moving the spinal bones and stretching your spine and muscles. Most quality massage chairs come with rolling action standard. And when you sit in one of these chairs and feel it push your spine back into position, you’ll understand why it’s so popular.

Full Recline - To truly get a deep tissue massage you need to put as much of your weight onto your massage chair as possible. Unfortunately, many of the popular massage chairs out there only recline to a paltry 135 degrees. For maximum benefits, I’d recommend you get a chair that reclines 170 to 180 degrees so that you can lay down and truly enjoy your massage. (This is particularly important if you suffer from sciatica and find sitting difficult or painful.)

Airbag Massage - This is truly an optional feature, but if you’ve ever experienced a good foot and calf massage, or arm massage, or seat massage you know how wonderful it can feel.

Many new chairs now come with additional innovative features, like mechanical foot rollers, zero gravity, inversion, extended roller tracks down the back, chromotherapy, music systems, and even head massagers! They are all pretty cool features, but you need to decide what is important to you and which features make the most sense to you.


  1. How Durable Is Your Chair?

Unfortunately there are many, many “knock off” massage chairs being sold online . . . chairs that are hacked together cheaply in Chinese factories, don’t live up to their promises, or do what they’re meant to, and are prone to breaking at a moment’s notice.

When I was looking for my first massage chair, I discovered that there are two big factors to think about to make sure that you get a quality chair that will last you for years to come. They are:

How long is your chair’s warranty? The longer the warranty offered by the manufacturer of the chair, the more confidence they have in their product. But don't be fooled by fly-by-night online companies who offer outrageous 10 year warranties on a $2000 massage chair. Good luck finding your retailer in 6 months when you have a problem with your chair! A 10 year warranty doesn't mean anything if you can't get a hold of the company that sold you the chair!! Most of the "good" massage chair manufacturer's (like the ones we represent) offer a rock-solid 3-5 year limited warranty. Actually, Inada has come out with a 3 year comprehensive, on-site warranty for all their chairs, while Panasonic has introduced a 3 year parts and labor, in-home warranty on their top tier chairs...both warranties the best in the business.

What’s the reputation of the brand? Beware of strange sounding or “rare” brands. Yes, it’s possible that a little-known brand has a high-quality product, but with an investment like a massage chair you want to be safe, not sorry. In my experience, I’ve found Inada, Human Touch, Panasonic, Infinity, Luraco, Osaki, and Cozzia to offer higher-quality chairs backed by great warranties. 


  1. How easy is your chair to repair?

Even the best massage chair may eventually break down. Make sure your massage chair is built with a modular design (most are nowadays) so that it can be easily repaired . . . and so that you can repair it without having to send the whole chair back to the manufacturer. Not to brag, but virtually every chair we sell at has a sturdy, modular design . . . not to mention a reputation for durability. Be careful of warranties that, in the small print, expect you to ship the chair back to the company if you need a repair. We prefer to recommend chairs that have in-home warranties, especially during the first year.

Make sure, also, that your massage chair manufacturer has easy-to-reach customer support after the sale. If you have a problem with your chair and you call customer support, there better be someone at the other end of the phone picking up and interacting with you about your chair.


  1. What’s the reputation of the reseller?

Unfortunately there are many “fly by night” online companies out there selling massage chairs to make a quick buck. Honestly, most of the sites you see out there aren’t really companies at all, but just marketing middle men who don’t provide any real value.
