Sadly, millions of people around the globe suffer from severe pain in the neck area. The causes of this affliction can be as varied as the people who suffer from it. Anything from an old high school sports injury or a car accident to just sleeping in the wrong position can cause a person to suffer from mild to severe neck pain, for an indefinite period of time.

However, the main, most common reason for neck pain is not accidents or sports injuries but is in fact simply age. Getting older can be very hard on our bodies, particular our muscles and joints. As we grow old, the joints in bodies start to show the signs of physical wear and tear; this often results in a medical condition called osteoarthritis of the neck.

One very effective and increasingly popular therapy for helping to ease and control painful neck conditions is physical therapy. This treatment option is considered a conservative choice and is rapidly becoming the first step taken by many neck pain patients. Physical therapy is usually based around the sufferer engaging in special stretches and gentle exercises that are specifically designed for the type of pain the patient is experiencing. These special exercise routines generally help, over a period of time, to control and minimize the severity of the pain that the sufferer feels.

Sciatica treatments can be placed in two categories being surgical and non surgical options. If left to heal the sciatica pain usually can take a couple of days or between six to twelve weeks to heal using non surgical methods. The pain management method for non-surgical option also includes some alternative treatments.

Medication: Plain over the counter medication can help to relieve the inflammation being the cause of compression on the sciatic nerve. Check with the pharmacist for medication that can help. Oral steroids are another option to reduce the inflammation with brings relief.

Heat/Ice: Heat/Ice packs are also used to reduce pain. Try both methods and determine which works best for you. Some patients feel that the ice works best while others prefer the heat alleviates for faster pain relief. The pack, either ice or heat, can be applied every 20 or 30 minutes for relief over a period of two hours.

Injections: If the sciatica pain is severe epidural steroid injections can be considered as a sciatica treatment option. The treatment is used to reduce inflammation around the sciatic nerve. After relief is attained further treatment involves starting an exercise program for long term relief.

Massage therapy help improve blood circulation and mobility to the back therefore stimulating the muscle and the body to start internal healing mechanisms. Manual manipulation is done by a trained health professional as it involves adjusting the spine curvature. The idea is through better alignment of the spinal column pressure on the sciatic nerve can be release. This would in turn bring relief from the pain cause by compression.

Back Pain Management and Relief

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

With so much available information, determining the course of action when dealing with back pain can lead you to be confused and unsure of your direction.

Back pain, while a common occurrence, is not typically debilitating, though the causes usually don’t go away and without treatment, they may not ever.

Pain management should start at the beginning. The first important thing would be to understand your back and spine. Remember the spine is the support of your body, and the muscles surrounding the spine are necessary for your movement, bending and carrying of the rest of your body.

This being the case, it is important to adopt a healthy lifestyle, utilizing exercise and diet heavy in essential vitamins.

Finding ways of stress relief is also necessary for a healthy back and spine. Hot and cold treatments, lightweight exercise and stretching routines and chair massage are all ways to boost the health of the back. Using ice packs can help to reduce swelling, while a soak in a hot tub or heating pads can help to sooth the muscles. Many massage chairs have incorporated heating elements which not only sooth the pain of muscles, but also increases the blood flow to the tissues, helping to deliver healing nutrients.

Natural Pain Management

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

With the increase of stress in today’s society it really isn’t a surprise we have seen such an increase in the intake of fast food, trans fatty acids, preservatives, and sugar. We are bombarded with hormones in meats and dairy products and artificial sugars in our food. With all the changes in diets should we really be surprised at the overload of our immune systems leading to side effects such as constant pain.

The pain you experience is simply a signal to your brain that somewhere your body is not functioning at top efficiency. Perhaps due to injury, disease, or even strain on the tissues. Without pain, you wouldn’t know something was wrong, or that treatment is necessary.

Fortunately several options are available to treat chronic (persistent) pain without the use of medications, whether over-the-counter or prescribed.

A change of diet while increasing our intake of essential vitamins, minerals and herbs can help to reduce the pain we experience. Sometimes the pain is caused by a simple deficiency of one of these in an area of the body.

Increasing the amount of exercise and sleep you get can help to improve your immune system, as well as providing your body time to repair itself.

Chair massage on a regular basis can help to relieve stress and strain on muscles and tissues, as well as increase blood flow to deliver healing nutrients to tissue.

Pain Management

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

Pain is a subjective experience that can rise with or without an actual stimulus, resulting in the uncomfortable feelings that may even include an emotional reaction. Pain is an important part of our defense system, alerting us to deficiencies or problems with our normal activities. However, because pain is merely a signal, improperly sent or received signals can give us pain without an actual cause.

Two distinct categories classify pain types. Acute pain is typically short term, and is related to tissue damage or disease. It is typically a sharp pain, followed by aching and can be centralized to an area following an injury or fall. Chronic pain is a long term, meaning six months or more, experience. Unfortunately, chronic pain is harder to treat and sometimes diagnose than acute pain owing to the difficulty in finding the source of the pain.

Fortunately several options are available for treating pain, and most are non-invasive managements. In today’s market, several types of medications are available, both prescription and over-the-counter. Many help to not only inhibit the pain receptors of the body, but also include anti-inflammatory medications to reduce swelling of damaged tissue.

In addition, massage therapy has been shown to help manage pain of the back, neck, shoulders and legs. A chair massage can deliver the same effects while also providing easy access and the comfort of your own home.

Chairs vs. Drugs

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

When dealing with pain, there are many treatment options available.  One option involves the use of pharmaceuticals and another involves the use of massage, and natural relaxation techniques to treat and relieve the pain.  They can either be used alone, or in conjunction with each other.

Pharmaceuticals can help to dull and lessen the pain of muscle strain and after muscular injury.  They can deliver immediate results, but those results typically last, at the most, eight hours.  However, medication used to treat pain can have side effects such as drowsiness, which makes it inappropriate to take during work as it could affect your ability to perform.  Long term use of these strong painkillers can also cause the body to build up a tolerance to them, and can cause symptoms of withdrawal when they are not taken any longer.

Natural methods, such as massage can be more beneficial in the long term, because it not only relieves pain, but it prevents the pain from returning.  Massage works directly on the source of the problem, unlike medication that affects the nervous system.  Massage provides the increased blood flow, and flexibility that our muscles need to heal and to function properly.  Massage chairs provide the treatment that is needed to maintain long term relief from back pain.  It doesn’t have any of the side effects that pain killers have, and can be used as long and as often as needed or wanted.

Cancer Pain Management

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Cancer can be a bleak and trying condition to deal with in any of it’s many forms. Each form comes with it’s own kind of pain that affects people in different ways. Pain management plans are critical to cancer survival and should be developed with a doctor, monitored accordingly, and changed as needed.

Pain management plans start with being very specific with your doctor. The more informed your doctor is, the better they will be able to treat your pain, so noting when and where the pain started as well as severity, duration and description of the pain is critical.

Medicinal treatment is generally where pain control begins. Your doctor is likely to suggest several different drugs or combinations of medications to treat pain and the success of them is highly dependant on communication with the doctor.

Other methods include heat and cold therapy. The cold is used to reduce swelling and numb pain. The heat is to relax muscles. Massage therapy or use of a massage chair can relax tense muscles as well. Pain killing skin creams, drugs that are used to treat depression and in sever cases, nerve blocks are used to treat pain in cancer patients as well.
