Sufferers of chronic pain and chronic illnesses can benefit from a range of therapies and treatments. However, treatment options depend on the source of the pain, as well as the cause. This needs to be evaluated carefully because improper treatment of pain can lead to the consequence of more pain, or pain from a new source.

Unfortunately, most people who suffer from chronic pain are unaware of the various options for treatment. They content themselves to either living with the pain, or with simply taking a variety of offered pain medications.

While over-the-counter and prescription pain medication can be effective, over time our bodies begin to get used to the manipulation, and the effects decrease. By incorporating a number of management therapies the dependence on only medications can decrease.

Including acupuncture or massage therapy into your pain treatment regime can help to alleviate the reliance on medication alone.

Regular sessions in a massage chair can help to reduce tension of muscles in the back, helping to curb the pain from sciatica or herniated discs. The heating functions of most massage chairs can increase the flow of blood, carrying oxygen and nutrients to the areas.

Myofascial Pain: More Than Just Muscle Pain

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Persistent sore, tight muscles may be an indication of a chronic problem. Sometimes pain in the muscles makes it difficult to move, or the tightness can lead to headaches. If this is the case, you may be experiencing symptoms of Myofascial Pain Syndrome.

Myofascial Pain Syndrome translates to meaning pain of the muscle and connective tissue, and is a type of chronic pain syndrome. However, because of the inclusion of connective tissue, including tendons and ligaments, this syndrome becomes vastly complex.

This pain syndrome includes what are referred to as Trigger Points, rather they are areas of irritable contractions in the muscles and surrounding tissue. They can be found in muscles, tendons, skin, scar tissue and ligaments. These trigger points can be cause by a variety of issues, including disease, infection, or physical trauma.

Myofascial therapy begins by locating the trigger points that appear to be causing the pain. By careful exercise and stretching regimes you can begin to work out the areas of painful contractions. With the inclusion of chair massage therapy, the muscles can be loosened, fluid flow increased and the muscle stretched allowing for increased flexibility. All of which help to decrease the pain caused by Myofascial Pain Syndrome.
