Physical Therapy for the Lower Back: How to Prevent and Treat Lower Back Pain

Lower back pain is the most common cause of job-related disability in the United States. It is the second most common neurological ailment in the U.S., the first is headache. Some people are fortunate enough to be able to treat their lower back pain with medications and have a resolved issue within two to four weeks. However there are more severe cases which require longer and more active treatment.

When the spine of the back suffers injury the muscles become inhibited or shut down in order to reduce more injury. When these muscles don’t immediately recover sometimes repetitive strain will cause a larger injury which results in pain.

Physical Therapy is one way to prevent the muscles from becoming inhibited. The combination of stretching, exercises and massage therapy make up the overall process of physical therapy.

Treatment depends on the type of lower back pain, as well as the cause of the pain. Exercise is one the general home remedies for lower back pain, because of the overall consensus that by remaining active, you can remain healthy. Stretching is used to help strengthen core muscles along the spine, helping to properly warm-up muscles and to help keep the body balanced.

Chair massage can be used to help stimulate the tissues to help recover from strains and injuries. Massage helps to increase fluid flow to the muscles, delivering healing nutrients to the tissue.
