Regular Deep Tissue Massage

Saturday, April 17th, 2010

A gentle massage works well for everyday muscle stiffness, but if you have a constant pain or tightness in the muscles of your back and body, a deeper massage could be necessary.  Deep tissue massage works to achieve a different goal then a massage meant to only relax and re energize.  It works to heal the muscles below the surface and to give the tendons more flexibility.

Massage, when it goes beyond the upper layers of the muscles, help to increase the flexibility of the muscles.  When muscles are tense and tight, they are more susceptible to injuries.  When muscles become damaged after an injury, scar tissue can develop which can impede the flexibility of muscles even more.  When this happens, it causes a cycle of injury and damage that can cause serious problems when not treated over a long period of time.

For massage to truly be effective, it, like most other treatments, has to be done regularly.  Stress doesn’t happen all at once.  It develops gradually, and so it has to be prevented and treated on a regular basis.  Deep tissue massage is now available in a variety of massage chairs from several manufacturers.  Massage chairs and other massage equipment can target specific areas of the body that receive the most stress such as the feet and neck, as well as offer a full body massage.

Neck Pain

Friday, April 16th, 2010

Neck related injuries can be incredibly complex and difficult to diagnose and treat. The elaborate nature of that area of the body is made so in that it contains vertebrae, vertebral discs, muscles, ligaments, tendons and the spinal cord in a very small area. The ways in which the neck can be injured or inflamed are numerous. Everything from poor posture and work stress to conditions such as arthritis, meningitis and torticollis can cause neck pain. Acute injuries attributed to accidents, sports injuries or anything sudden can be much more severe. Regardless, all conditions should be assessed by a health care professional.

After any neck injury or pain is treated by a doctor there will be an opportunity for home care of the injury and getting this phase of the healing process right is critical to successful treatment. Applying ice and cold packs to the affected area will decrease swelling. Ice massage for short periods of time can numb neck pain. If massage hurts, do not continue. Avoid heating pads, hot tubs, etc or anything that can cause swelling until it’s gone. Proper sleeping habits are essential when working through a neck injury. If tension is a reason for neck pain, massage or the use of a massage chair can prove to be quite helpful.

Massage vs Pharmaceuticals

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Massage is one of the oldest forms of healing known to mankind.  It has benefits that cannot be provided by any other form of treatment such as pharmaceuticals and other, more mainstream treatments.  Anyone can benefit from regular massage from athletes, dancers, and anyone that has muscles!

There are many reasons that you should have massages.  Many of have a variety of outside stressors that we experience daily.  Work, school, and family life, while enjoyable, can also be a source of stress and anxiety that can cause our muscles to become tense and sore.  It’s not only a means of relaxation.  Massage can actually improve your circulation, which gives the body an overall feeling of wellness and energy.  It can also relieve pain due to overuse or strain of muscles.  Massage has been shown to improve memory and concentration and to improve the mood of the recipient.

Whether you utilize massage to relieve ongoing pain, or to spot treat muscle strain, a massage chair is a great tool to assist you.  It allows you to receive regular, therapeutic, and relaxing massages without having to make several trips to a massage professional’s office.  It also requires only one initial investment at the time of purchase, and after that, you won’t have the expense of regular visits to a massage professional.

Good Massage Chair

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Professional massage is something that many people invest a large amount of money in.  However, in times when fiscal responsibility has become more and more important, less time, and money can be spent on visits to a massage professional.

Massage chairs are a great alternative, but before you make the investment in one, you need to know what to look for  in a good massage chair.  It is important to do research on many different brands and types of massage chairs to be sure that it can accomplish all of the types of massage that you need or prefer to have.  There are many options available.  Some chairs are only capable of one type of massage while others can perform deep tissue massage, Shiatsu massage, and many other kinds.  There are also options such as heated massage available that you will want to consider.

There is many online resources available to help you determine what type of massage chair will be best for you, but it will also help you to find retailers near you that carry these types of chairs.  Many times, there are demonstration models available that you can try out in the store before you make your purchase.  The store associates are also a great resource for information and can answer any question you might have about the different types of massage chairs available.

The Gift of Massage

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Relaxation isn’t what many of us think of when we think of a gift that we could give to someone.  It is not tangible, but is one of the most important things that we can do for ourselves and for each other.

Gift certificates for spa massages may be the first thing you think of when you think of giving the gift of massage.  However, a massage chair would be a much better option.  By giving a massage chair, you allow the recipient to enjoy a massage whenever they would like rather than once.  It also allows them to have a massage in the comfort of their own home, on their own schedule.

There are also a variety of other massage items that can  given as a gift, and will  fit any budget.  Different products are available that can target specific areas of the body such as the feet and lower back.  Massage pads allow the user to attach it to their chair at work or the seat of their car so they can have a massage while working or driving.  Also, hand held massagers are easily portable and can tallow the recipient to focus the massage on any area of the body.

Muscle Knots

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

While the causes of back pain can run the gamut, one of the most common and easily treatable causes of back pain is referred to as knots in the muscles.  Muscle knots are not exactly what the name implies.  The muscle does not actually get tied up or twisted.  It means that the muscle has areas in it that for one reason or another have become less flexible.  When this happens, it results in a pain that does not typically go away until it is treated.

Massage is probably the most effective way of relieving back pain cause by muscle knots.  Sometimes, the use of heat packs can help to loosen the muscles before the massage is done in order to improve the results.  A massage chair can offer both of these options.  It can deliver a heated massage to all areas of the back, as well as the rest of the body!  When the body is relaxed, the mind relaxes too, and it leads to a feeling of overall wellness.  A massage chair is a great option because it can be used any time a muscle knot forms, and you don’t have to wait to make an appointment, or invest the money that you would have to in a massage professional.  The massage chair can also be used daily in order to prevent future knots in the muscles.

Range of Motion

Friday, April 9th, 2010

Back pain is mainly caused by the misuse, overuse or strain of muscles during physical activity.  At some point in our lives, we will all experience back pain.  It is a common affliction, and as such, it has been studied extensively, and many treatments have been proven beneficial.  One of these treatments is massage.  Massage therapy can help improve many areas that contribute to overall health.

When muscles relax, it increases the range of motion our bodies have.  An increased range of motion will help you to be more comfortable during physical activity, and increased flexibility means less chance of injury and strain to muscles.  This will make exercise easier, which will further strengthen muscles and prevent injury further.  When our core muscles are weak, it can cause us to use other muscles incorrectly, which causes us to move and hold our bodies differently than they should be.  This causes stiffness and soreness at the end of the day.

Many times, back pain has to be treated by a combination of massage and chiropractic care, along with an exercise program to strengthen the muscles of the core area of the body.  Massage increases blood flow to all areas of the body, and this will help to heal them, and to relieve and prevent soreness after physical activity. A massage chair can take care of part of this treatment regimen.  It can be done in the privacy of your own home, on your schedule.  And in the end, it is more cost effective then a trip to a massage professional several times a week.

Massage and Pregnancy

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

Massage has long been an effective and proven method to promote blood circulation and ease tension in aching, tense or strained muscles. A critical time that all of those aspects be addressed is during pregnancy. Pregnancy causes a great strain on a woman’s body to include aches in all areas of the back, and swelling throughout the body. Prenatal massage has enjoyed success in recent years in the way of temporary relief for stressors that pregnancy can inflict on the expectant mother.

Pregnant woman often experience edema or swelling in the legs caused by poor circulation which is just a side effect of pregnancy. Massage and breathing exercises can stimulate blood flow to the legs and ankles easing the discomfort to these areas without even touching them. The inability to touch those areas can present the single expectant mother with quite the conundrum. Ideally, a professional masseuse would handle this sort of problem but it’s not always practical or economically prudent. Some well-spent time in a massage chair that focuses on the strains of the back can be highly beneficial in this situation. The back is probably the most effected area of muscular discomfort for pregnant woman and can be made even worse if the mother to be is already a mother of others.

The benefits of prenatal massage can relieve back tension as well as lower body circulatory problems.

Lower Back Pain

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

Lower back pain is something that we will, unfortunately, all experience in our lives at some point.  There are many reasons that this happens from simple overuse of muscles to injuries of the muscles and ligaments in the back.

The lower back region, or lumbosacral region, is used for almost all activities that are performed by our bodies throughout the day.  Because of this, it is important to know the causes of lower back pain and ways to prevent it.

One of the most common causes of lower back pain is injury.  There are many kinds of injuries that can affect the lower back, such as fractures of the vertebrae caused by a vehicle accident or fall, or compression injuries to the back caused by a hard fall on the buttocks or head.

Many injuries are also caused by straining the muscles of the lower back.  When muscles are sore or strained, it can cause a person to hold their body differently then they normally would, which can cause other muscles to become sore.  In many cases, a massage or a massage chair could relieve the initial symptoms and prevent further pain.  It can also be used daily as a preventative measure to ensure that the incidence of back pain can be kept to an absolute minimum.

General Information on Massage

Monday, April 5th, 2010

Massage involves the rubbing and  manipulation of the soft tissues of the body, especially muscles.  Massage can improve relaxation, and aid in pain relief.  It can also help to relieve muscle strain and tension as well as increase blood flow, and improve the range of motion in joints.

There are more than 80 types of massages.  Massage is most often performed by a massage professional using his/her hands.  However, other parts of the body, including the feet and elbows may be used depending on the type of massage being performed.

Swedish massage is a gentle style of massage that is recommended for the relief of muscle tension, to increase blood flow and to promote relaxation.  The masseuse/masseur uses longer strokes and also kneading motions on the top layer of muscles only.

Deep tissue massage is a more intense type of massage that is recommended for long lasting muscle pain and tension.  In this type of massage, the professional will use slower motions with a more intense and heavy pressure than that of other, gentler massage techniques such as Swedish massage.  This pressure reaches the deeper layers of the muscles.

Self massage, or home massage is a great way to relax after a stressful day of work or school, after a workout, or just to energize yourself in the morning to get ready for the day ahead.  You can use your hands and fingers to massage your own hands, feet, and neck.  Use a massage chair to relax and relieve stress and tension in areas of the body that are harder to reach, such as the mid and lower back.
