Relaxation Techniques to Reduce Stress

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Relaxation is not just about peace of mine, rather it is a process which decreases the wear and tear of life’s challenges on your mind and body. Everyone can benefit from learning relaxation techniques.

A number of relaxation techniques require little time and are effective to utilize anywhere.

One of the easiest relaxation techniques is proper breathing. It may seem simplistic, but with time and practice you can train your body to breathe correctly all the time, allowing a constant flow of relaxation to be in the body. Long, slow intakes of breath will allow you to use the diaphragm to breathe with, not just the lungs. This contracts the stomach, and when letting the air out, allows the whole body to loosen.

Meditation, yoga and exercising are all additional stress relievers. The stretching of muscles allows your body to repeatedly loosen strained muscles in the activity. By slowing mental activity you can create an internal peacefulness to reduce your stress.

Massage therapy is another great relaxation technique. With the improved quality of massage chairs this form of therapy is readily available in your home. Chair massage helps to loosen tight muscles (often a side-effect of stress), as well as stimulate blood flow.

Myofascial Pain: More Than Just Muscle Pain

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Persistent sore, tight muscles may be an indication of a chronic problem. Sometimes pain in the muscles makes it difficult to move, or the tightness can lead to headaches. If this is the case, you may be experiencing symptoms of Myofascial Pain Syndrome.

Myofascial Pain Syndrome translates to meaning pain of the muscle and connective tissue, and is a type of chronic pain syndrome. However, because of the inclusion of connective tissue, including tendons and ligaments, this syndrome becomes vastly complex.

This pain syndrome includes what are referred to as Trigger Points, rather they are areas of irritable contractions in the muscles and surrounding tissue. They can be found in muscles, tendons, skin, scar tissue and ligaments. These trigger points can be cause by a variety of issues, including disease, infection, or physical trauma.

Myofascial therapy begins by locating the trigger points that appear to be causing the pain. By careful exercise and stretching regimes you can begin to work out the areas of painful contractions. With the inclusion of chair massage therapy, the muscles can be loosened, fluid flow increased and the muscle stretched allowing for increased flexibility. All of which help to decrease the pain caused by Myofascial Pain Syndrome.

Shoulder Injuries in Sports

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

The shoulder is the most common site for sports related injuries. The shoulder joint is a complex junction in the body, composed of a four-point joint. The Glenohumeral joint (the ball-and-socket between the scapula and humerus), the acromio-clavicular joint, the ternoclavicular joint and the scapulo-thoracic joint. Problems in any of these joints or the surrounding muscles can lead to a loss in functionality of the shoulder and an increase in pain.

Some sports, like tennis, can result in chronic pain of the shoulder due to inadequate healing of the tissues after a minor injury. The most common site of shoulder injury emanates from the shoulder cuff muscles. The shoulder cuff, or rotator cuff, is composed of several muscles, but primarily the subscapularis, the teres minor, in infraspinatus and the supraspinatus. These are all small, but essential muscles.

After straining, or injuring the shoulder, the first 48 to 72 hours are critical to a rapid recovery. It is essential to follow a R.I.C.E. regime; Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation.

In addition, a massage can effectively increase blood flow to an injured area, help reduce associated scar tissue and loosen the muscles. Using a chair massage can help get you treatment more rapidly than waiting for an appointment.

Understanding and Living with Lower Back Pain

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Eighty percent of American will or have experienced lower back pain during the course of their lives. While this pain will typically express itself as an ache, some instances can be excruciating to the point of immobilizing the sufferer.

As a person gets older their muscles and bones become weaker, this in turn leads to the weakening of discs in the skeletal system as well as the loss of flexibility and fluidity of the joints. This increased weakness can enhance the likelihood of injury during stress.

In addition, the number of hours we typically spend sitting causes our joints to freeze up. This decrease in our mobility also increases the stress in our lower backs, resulting in pain.

Fortunately, many solutions exist for treating the symptoms of pain, including various over-the-counter and prescription medications. An epidural can be used for anti-inflammatory and pain relief reasons. In severe cases, surgery is the necessary fix.

In addition, utilizing a chair massage not only can relieve pain, but can also lead to treatment of the cause (depending on what causes it). The tapping and rubbing and loosen the muscles, while increasing blood flow to encourage tissue repair.

5 Ways to Relieve Migraine Headaches Naturally

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

If you are worried about the possible side effects of taking medications for migraine headaches, try one of the many safe and natural approaches to treating your pain.

Natural treatments are typically safer and cheaper than pain medications, whether over the counter or prescribed. The possibility of negative side effects decrease with natural treatments as well.

Because of the differences of body chemistry and make-up, not all general pain relievers are effective at treating people the same. Just because one type of treatments works for one person, it doesn’t mean the same treatment will be just as effective for another. Because of this you will need to try the various treatments to fine what works for you.

One of the natural treatments is getting an adjustment with a chiropractor. Studies revealed that 80% of patients found some relief after getting treated by a chiropractor. Spinal problems can actually be the cause of the headaches and can be eliminated with regular treatment.

Another way to treat headaches is by releasing muscle tension, particularly in the neck and shoulders. A chair massage focusing on those areas can help to reduce the stress of the muscle tissue, relaxing the tendons and helping to reduce migraine headaches.

Wellness: The Total Concept

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

Wellness is a term thrown around a lot in today’s society. But, what exactly does the term cover. Most people would consider themselves to be “well” as long as they weren’t suffering from a serious illness or disease. But what if they are suffering from chronic headaches or back pain. Conditions which are not life-threatening, but is a person who is suffering considered “well.”

Advice is thrown at us from all directions on how to remain healthy. Unfortunately, this can lead to an overload of information, confusing and overwhelming people on how to actually use the advice.

With so many advancements of the modern era, it is no wonder that people are looking to incorporate alternative forms of treatment into their health regime.

Three common areas of health are stressed: Diet, Exercise and Relaxation.

Diet is important for overall wellness. Too much alcohol consumption and poor nutrition can lead to increased obesity which can lead to problems both physical and psychological.

Exercise helps to keep our bodies working in proper order, helping to slow the overall rate of deterioration of tissues.

Relaxation helps to reduce the amount of stress on our body. Reducing the strain which can leave the immune system weak and our overall health in a vulnerable position. Chair massage is an effective way to help relax the body by loosening the tightness of muscles in the shoulders, back and neck.

Wake-up Massage

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

Anyone who has had insomnia the night before work or an important event has experienced dealing with next day sleepiness. Often they drink too much coffee or take any array of stimulants peddled in convenience stores to provide a quick jolt of energy that is often times followed by a crash that leaves the person more tired than they were before they took the stimulant. This is dangerous for more reasons than just personal health as fatigue can lead to shoddy work in one aspect, or car accidents in another.

If you find yourself at work and succumbing to drowsiness, it is possible that a wake-up massage administered by yourself could benefit you in many ways. Gently rubbing your neck, feet, hands and claves can stave off sleepiness and promote alertness in a natural way with no crash at the end. Acupressure, which is done with the hand and not with needles, as is acupuncture, has been medically proven to promote healthy sleep and reduce pain. The nightly use of a masseur or massage chair can facilitate the healthy acupressure in these instances and when used with a healthy wake up routine can further prevent fatigue during the workday.

Short Term Pain

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

The diagnosis and treatment of back pain has creased a multi-billion dollar industry.  This is because back pain will affect almost everyone at some point.  Sometimes pain comes on suddenly that doesn’t last longer than a few weeks.  Back pain can also be something that is much more constant and long term.

Massage chairs are often used to treat the more short term kind of back pain, but can also be used as part of a maintainence program for chronic or long term back pain.  Back pain is often caused when muscles of the back aren’t used evenly.  When force or strain is placed in one area of the back, it causes the body to compensate by using overusing other muscles or using muscles incorrectly.  This can cause stiffness and pain.

Massage chairs can immediately treat the source of most acute back pain.  It relaxes and elongates muscles.  This allows the muscles to be used evenly again, preventing further stiffness and possible damage to muscles.  It also improves the range of motion of muscles.  For this reason, massage chairs are often used in chiropractic offices to help loosen up a patient’s muscles before they have a spinal adjustment done by the chiropractor.

Relief for Cancer

Monday, April 19th, 2010

It has been shown in studies that massage can help to relieve the pain experienced by patients that have been affected with cancer.  It can also help to alleviate depression associated with a life changing diagnosis, enduring painful treatments, and the long recovery process.  When any area of our bodies are afflicted with disease and pain, it can affect the whole body.

Those suffering from disease can benefit from massage, but many times it requires frequent massage and a massage that is gentle but effective.  Many times, people affected with illnesses such as cancer are extremely weak, and may not feel like getting up and out of the house to go to a spa or other place several times a week to have a massage done by a massage professional.

A massage chair works well for this kind of maintainence and healing regimen.  It allows for an easy and convenient way to receive the healing massage that is vital to maintaining proper blood flow, and relaxation.  A massage chair can be used any time of the day or night, without the user having to move from the comfort of their own home.  It also helps to mitigate the expenses that are often incurred during the treatment of such a disease.  Instead of spending money several times a week for a professional massage, a one time investment in the chair is made, and it can be used for several years.  This way, it can be enjoyed even after the user wins their battle with cancer.
