Can Deoderant Cause Breast Cancer?

January 25th, 2012

Many people have gotten e-mail chains warning you about using deoderant because it can cause breast cancer. While certain beauty and hygeine products do contain paraben, a preservative that has been found in breast cancer cells, there is no proof that personal care products cause breast cancer. Rather than change your entire beauty regime, simply avoid products that don’t contain active ingredients that affect hormones.

“It has to do with certain underarm products that contain preservatives called parabens. These chemicals can act like the hormone estrogen in the body. Estrogen is known to fuel certain breast cancers. Many breast cancers develop in the part of the breast closest to the armpit, where antiperspirants and other underarm products are used. So where are all the parabens coming from? Parabens such as methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, isopropylparaben, and isobutylparaben are also found in makeup, moisturizers, and hair care and shaving products.”

Do You Know What You Are Touching?

January 24th, 2012

In elementary school you are introduced to your five senses, in high school you get a little bit more in depth about the breakdown of how these senses work, and if you desire, in college you can learn even more. However, despite how much we know, there is even more that we still don’t know. For instance, how do you determine what exactly you are touching without seeing it?

“You can deflect a single hair on your arm and feel it, but how can you tell the difference between a raindrop, a light breeze or a poke of a stick? Touch is not yes or no; it’s very rich, and now we’re starting to understand how all those inputs are processed. In order to determine how all the input from each hair is gathered and transmitted to the brain the team used a different staining method which allowed them to dye the other end of the cell, in the spinal cord.”

Get More Fiber in Your Diet

January 24th, 2012

Almost everyone is looking for ways to help reduce their likelihood of getting diabetes, one of the simplest and most effective ways is to increase your fiber intake. Not only will this help to keep your digestive system regular, but it also helps to make you feel more full, absorbs excess water in your system and can help limit your sugars. Look for ways to naturally increase the fiber in your diet.

“Fiber is probably best known for its ability to help with constipation. But fiber also can lower your risk of diabetes and heart disease. How can you get more fiber? Choose cereals with ‘bran’ or ‘fiber’ in the name. Switch to whole-grain breads and pastas. Use brown rice, barley and bulgur instead of plain white rice. And mix chopped frozen broccoli into prepared spaghetti sauce. Just remember: Drink plenty of water since fiber works best when it absorbs water.”

Do Cars and Televisions Increase the Potential for Heart Attacks?

January 24th, 2012

A rather fascinating study was recently conducted on how cars and television affect the rates of heart attacks in a population. In developing nations, the number of heart attacks rapidly increases as the number of televisions and cars increase. This is likely due to the increase in the number of people transferring to sedentary behaviors. But how do these same products affect a developed country where exercise programs are available for television, and cars can take you to the gym?

“A worldwide study has shown that physical activity during work and leisure time significantly lowers the risk of heart attacks in both developed and developing countries. Ownership of a car and a television was linked to an increased risk of heart attacks, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Much is already known about the association between physical activity and cardiovascular risk, but what this study adds, among many other things, is a global perspective. The study shows that mild to moderate physical activity at work, and any level of physical activity during leisure time reduces the risk of heart attack, independent of other traditional risk factors in men and women of all ages, in most regions of the world and in countries with low, middle or high income levels. Interestingly, heavy physical labour at work did not protect against heart attacks.”

Do You Have a Plan For Your Psoriasis?

January 23rd, 2012

Those who suffer from psoriasis know how difficult it can be to treat. While mild forms can be treated with vitamin D or cortisone, heavy forms are often treated with low doses of chemotherapy, a somewhat extreme measure. Fortunately researchers in Sweden are working to find out more about how psoriasis develops and what genes are responsible for it expression. If you or someone you know suffers from psoriasis, you may want to keep an eye on the developing research.

“An important component is the psoriasin protein (S100A7), which are abundant in psoriasis-affected skin but rarely in normal skin. The same protein is also assumed to be a factor in the development of breast cancer. The research team, led by associate professor Charlotta Enerbäck, have now illustrated that, in a study on cultured skin cells, the interaction between psoriasin, oxygen free radicals and vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGF) leads to significantly increased cell division and growth of new blood vessels (angiogenesis). When we blocked the formation of psoriasin, the expression of VEGF also decreased.”

Herbal Meds Can’t Cure Everything

January 23rd, 2012

As the the number of herbal medication products increases, a dangerous gap in education is taking place. Some of these herbal medications can interfere with prescription drugs or other medicinal products. Before starting on a regime that includes herbal medicines, check with your pharmacist about possible drug interactions that can either cause your medication to cease working, or cause a dangerous side effect. If nothing else, you should be able to get a recommendation from your pharmacist about where to find information about possible drug interactions. Don’t necessarily trust the person behind the herbal medication counter, they likely haven’t gone to school to study how the chemicals interact.

“Herbal medicines have traditionally been used for the relief of osteoarthritis symptoms. However, there is a lack of licensed herbal medicinal products on the market for such symptoms, and none specifically licensed for osteoarthritis. Also the efficacy and safety of such products is generally under researched and information on potentially significant herb-drug interactions is limited.”

Weight Loss Isn’t All In What You Eat

January 23rd, 2012

If you have been keeping track of your calories and you aren’t losing weight, don’t get discouraged and give up, you may need to find a few methods to help speed up your metabolism to assist your diet. We are all genetically programmed with a metobolic rate, some faster and some slower, but there are a few things you can do to help boost your body’s natural ability.

“Here’s something to feel good about: Your body is a calorie-burning machine. You’ll even torch a few while reading this article. The point is, every single thing you do—from breathing to eating to sleeping—uses energy. The number of calories it would take just to lie in bed all day is called your resting metabolic rate. And just like your curly hair or warm personality, yours is unique. Although you can’t rewire your double helix or switch back the clock, there’s still plenty you can do to be a fast burner. All you need to do is remember these four research-backed truths.”

Keep Well-Informed To Stick To Your Diet

January 23rd, 2012

While everyone struggles keeping to their diets (even those who don’t appear to suffer), a recent study conducted in Italy found that people who are better informed have an easier time sticking to their diets. While I can’t see the correlation between keeping informed and keeping a diet, what can it hurt to be better informed of what is happening in the world.

“Basically, watching TV is often linked to physical inactivity and snacking, with negative effects on obesity, a major cardiovascular risk factor. In our study we paid attention to the capacity of people to get informed by using mass media, including the Internet and newspapers or magazines. We sought to see whether most informed people had better eating habits than those less exposed to information. Our study has however provided data which may turn out to be very useful in a period in which to combat obesity increase, unhealthy dietary habits and diffused laziness we are urged to find new ways to communicate health. We should stop being suspicious of mass media.”

Is Indoor Tanning Giving You Skin Cancer?

January 19th, 2012

In 2009 indoor tanning beds were officially labled as a carcinogen, topping the list with cigarettes and asbestos. Despite this label, the evidence that tanning beds can cause skin cancer is actually quite inconsistent. However, a recent study of 400 people (dating back from 2006) showed that people who used tanning beds were 69% more likely to get skin cancer than those who didn’t use the tanning beds. Before you work on your golden tan, you may want to consider all your options.

“Indeed, the evidence linking indoor tanning with melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, and squamous cell carcinoma, one of the more common forms of the disease, is “convincing,” according to the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer. But the research concerning tanning beds and basal cell carcinoma, the third and most frequent major type of skin cancer — which accounts for some 80% of all skin cancer cases in the U.S. — has thus far been inconsistent.”

Do You Know What Affects Your Blood Glucose?

January 19th, 2012

One of the tips doctors will give you at your annual physical will be to keep your blood glucose (or blood sugar) under control. However, they often don’t think about telling you how to keep your blood sugar under control. While you can go to the American Diabetes Association and get detailed information about how your blood glucose can fluctuate, it is important to know that many think affect your blood sugar, and not simply what you eat. For instance, exercise and stress can also affect how your body processes sugars.

“People with diabetes should monitor the amount of glucose (sugar) in their blood. Insulin and certain drugs often are key, but so is understanding what causes blood sugar levels to fluctuate. The American Diabetes Association mentions these factors: The foods you eat. How much you exercise, and when. Where in the body you inject insulin. The time of day that you inject yourself. Being sick. Being under stress.”
